At the risk of sounding like a turncoat...

Avoid rifles if you don't plan on making a serious investment. Without speed, we're slow as all getout. (who'da thought?) Without accuracy, we can't hit far outside of ideal (it may not be as much of a problem with your pet screen). Without a good random pool special, you won't achieve synergy with your pets. (a big deal when I was starting, I'd target mind pool all the time and wonder why things took so long to kill in a group)

I'd honestly recommend you go carbines if you are going to do just one line. Get the knockdowns, it'll be a better support to your pets. Also, you don't have to worry about the nasty point blank mods and most likely you'll just be firing in support of your pets, so the HAM costs won't be too much of a detriment.

Also, a side note, you won't be draining your mind pool with both healing and rifle specials.
