I did my leveling on Snorbals on Lok, although I did it with warning shot, and I died quite a few times doing so (before the whole decay thing...). I'd pull one from the group, bleed it, then warning shot it away over and over. I think they netted about 3k xp, but I don't remember now.

You're wrong 
Get a full set of doctors buffs and go to town. At 18-20k per lair you'll get that box fairly quick. I got the last twenty k off a quenker lair and a laser rifle. With decent armor and doctor's buffs you can take them easy.
