Thread: Moral Decisions as a Politican

As a Mayor of a City near a popular Spawn (Krayt Graveyard, Tatooine) I have found that I am pressed between a rock and a hard place with the upcoming decisions I have to make regarding the placement of City Structures.

Follow with me if you will as I explain my moral frustrations overthe placement of a Cloning Facility this upcoming week.

We are some 500m from the entrance to the valley of the Krayt Graveyard. I fear that the placement of a Cloning Facility in the City Limits will reduce people's concern for "Strategic", "Planned" or "Coordinated" attacks upon Krayts and reduce it to a mere human sea of people throwing themselves against Krayts trying to get the loot beacuse they can respawn just a short distance away, burst run and jump back into the battle.

Yet, there are also the legitimate uses - those who live in the area that get killed by some late-radar-appearance collection of Deathblowing MOBs (Feral Banthas, Dune Lizards, Tuskens, etc.. there are several) and given SOEs' current "ignorance" to this real-world problem (especially when mounted) of the delay of MOBs 'in your bubble' arriving late on radar.. this is an inevitable and unavoidable problem.

Why does this bother me?

Because I have no desire to become "The Mayor that RUINED the Krayt Graveyard". I have no desire to make this valueable hunting area become a hot spot for ill suited warriors running around like a bunch of fools and dragging Krayts through my city.

Now, perhaps there's another city or two somewhere out here by the Graveyard at this time. Perhaps one of them will establish a Cloning Facility. At that time I may establish a Cloning Facility, but I probably will hold true to the moral rationale I have for not placing the structure.

Why do I bring this up?

My HOPE is that other Mayors out there will consider these kind of ramifications as well. Everyone wants all the best stuff and to have all the facilities available to them for their cities - but is it taking away from the enjoyment of the game? Is it going to destroy certain aspects of the game and become a headache for you after the fact?

Many players are constantly griping about Camping, Kill Stealing and other endless topics - please take a few moments to consider how you may be leading / enhancing that constant bickering before you rush to put that new deed you've got to use.

Thanks for taking the time to read this - hope you don't find it a complete waste of the time it took.

Sounds like your city has the right mayor. I dont have an answer for you, but I am impressed with how much you care about it.

I am the mayor of a city on Interpid by the Krayt graveyard as well. You bring up an interesting point. Are you going to add a shuttleport? Most people would say the addition of a shuttleport would be the worst thing you could do. Right now the graveyard is a 3-4km walk, and that is what deters a lot of people. By adding a shuttleport you are opening up the region to everyone. That is precisely why we chose this location, we figured we would have a ton of shuttle traffic, and be able to use the shuttle fee as a major source of income.

Personally, I feel that the cloning center is not a big deal. With the new decay system I don't think people will be trying to solo krayts, are run back time and again after cloning.

Having player cities near pois is going to drastically change the game. I hope overall it will be an improvement. Where the casual person now has more access to the poi. The more hardcore people are going to be upset to see so many tourists at the remote locations and there will be a lot of complaining. I can't imagine what the Force Sensitive came on Dantooine is going to look like once there is a shuttle within 1km of it.

Consider a delayed placement and then push the cloning facility as far from the hunting location as possible at whatever radius you reach. An extra 700 meters on the run would somewhat cutdown on the negative effects while still offering people a safe place to clone. Given the decay system I doubt people will consider a cloning facilitiy to be better than a doctor on-site.

Remember to think in the long term, not just the short. The fact is that the human wave approach to hunting is expensive in terms of credits and decay, and its pretty brutal as well. I think you'll likely have that problem for the first week or two, but eventually all of those too weak to hunt krayts and too lazy to walk there to try will have tried, failed, cloned, and given up for now. Will it lead to increased Krayt hunting? Sure....but that's not a bad or amoral thing on its own.

Finally, make liberal use of the /cityban command. Post to your server board that if people are griefing at the graveyard, you'll personally ban them from your city (and thus your cloning center.) Use the opportunity to enforce a bit of order on a chaotic land. :-)

I don't think anyone is going to care about running through a safe town even if it is on the other side of the graveyard.

Please don't perceive this as a flame, but why did you place your city so close to the Graveyard in the first place?

Kudos for considering these issues though, because something like this has an effect on the gameplay of others as well.

I still disagree. I think the shuttleport will be much more disruptive to the game than a cloning facility will be.

I also feel the devs wanted us to place close to POIs or they would have instituted large no build zones. I personally think the issue is less severe than you think. People want krayt tissue, scales and pearls, but it is not that big of a swarm, at least not on Intrepid.

No for holocron farming I think a cloning facility would be a huge problem.

i also think that the shutle and cloning facilities are no big deal. Yes, it will make the krayt graveyard more popular, but consider the tax revenue from shuttle tickets, cloning, and sales of goods needed by hunters. I believe the big hunting areas will end up being the adventure planets. the krayt stuff is too commonly needed anyway.

It's a no-win situation. If you don't build a cloning facility and a shuttleport, someone else most likely will.

Does that mean you need to open the floodgates and be the first to do so? No, you can hold out and keep yourselves distant. If you discover that someone else builds one, should you build your own? Probably. Because if you don't, you are going to be left behind.

You are basically at the mercy of other Mayors on this one. Will they build close to the graveyard and give you some competition? Who knows. But if they do, you'll be faced with a big decision to make.

The only way to truly have avoided a problem like this - which will be present at every high-traffic POI - would have been to build in the middle of nowhere. But that would beg the question from potential visitors/citizens- "Why did you build out here? There's nothing around."

I don't know that there's a right or a wrong answer to all of this, but it raises a lot more questiosn than we'll ever be able to answer.

here is an idea: dont place a cloning facility. place a shuttle port instead. and to deter mass amounts of people coming out, have the price for it be extremely high like 5000 creds. That way the city gets lots of revenue, and people who really want to use it will, but people arent likely to be so reckless when fighting kryats because dying comes at an even bigger price.

however i dont know who/what determines the cost of a shuttleport, but if the mayor gets control of it, this could be a good idea.

mayor CAN add extra "fee" to the base shuttleport fee which goes into the treasure..

That is a PERFECT idea just place a shuttleport. People would have to "clone somewhere else" and you get revenue from shuttleport

I think i read somewhere that the city only collects the travel tax on outbound flights... can someone confirm this for me...

Because if it is the case it really will not deter anyone
