Yes, voting is the only way to gain xp. But I believe they could add other avenues, especially to reward the politicians who are voted in as mayor. How about xp gains for using your skills as politician. Say if you place beautification or set the city's bonus for a week you get a certain amount of xp. Kind of like CH xp. The main way to get it is by using your pet in battle, but you also get a little for training it new commands.

The challenge though is to find an advancement mechanism that you cannot grind or Powerlevel through.

If you got xp for placing a streetlamp, what is to stop someone from placing/destroying 10,000 street lamps and becoming a master politician tommorow?

oh wait, you said placing/destroying. sorry, didn't see that part. There would obviously have to be a delay in place that wouldn't let you pick something right back up after you placed it.

Not true. Get 200 people right away. 20k xp. That's... well one who tier! And another 1000 skill. get all level 2 and... well yep cant grind. Looks like I will be 500 points short of getting 3 skills that is annoying. I wanted to register city, get mission terminals and militia. Ah well.

The thing is, this is the first profession in the game you can't grind and actually have to work towards (or be appointed to do by your PA). You can grind other professions, some in less than a day and now that there is a profession in the game that will have a "Master" title that means something people want a way around the time and energy into earning that title. Even if you are sort of delegated as the resident politician of your PA (like I am, sort of) you still have to make sure everything in the city works smoothly or esle they will find someone else to be the mayor who spends the time to make the city work well and look good. Personally I like how politician's get xp, like I said it will now mean something when you have Master Politician over your head.

Politician is the profession of the Sith. To master politician requires the kind of patience that the Sith had for those thousands of years that they waited until a politician lead them to their height. It is because of this that I think I should be given a FS slot when I master politician.
