Thread: Politician lock out?

If I understand right, a Politician gains politician XP from votes and votes alone, and thus progresses up their skill tree.

In three months' time, when Little Johnny Howard decides to give up Australian politics and play SWG instead, how on earth is he going to compete? I can see his mayoral campaign now: "Vote for me! I may be a Novice and unable to do anything my competition can, but I've got perrrrsonality!"

Seriously. How do you get a foot in the door?

Perhaps the new Mayor will be able to maintain what the previous Mayor added to the city, but will only be able to add whatever he has the ability to add.

At least I hope this is the way it happens. If not, then you're right nobody would ever be displaced as mayor. Why would anyone vote for someone only to have the city trainers disappear, the militia disbanded, and the city to disappear from the planetary map. It would be nearly impossible for a Novice Politician to enter the game later.

Surely there are more benefits to the skill boxes of Politican than just placement of civic structures? It's a vicious problem - either a Novice Politician is uncompetetive or a Master Politician is an empty title.

I personally feel a Novice Politician SHOULD be less desirable as your city's Mayor. But if the only way to advance in Politician is to be desirable as the Mayor, you'd best hope the incumbent makes a lot of bad choices ...

I can't vouch for accuracy, but I'm going by the chart on this page:

It seems that placing structures and variouscity improvements (including trainers, mission terminals, etc.)is the main function of the mayor.

There's going to be a lot more to politician then what skills you have, although skills will probably play a good role in their desireability.

DHowever, don't forget managing taxes and PAYING for all of those structures without making his citizens feel like they're being charged too much.

Dealing with problems that rise from outside pressures on the cities (meany PA trying to take over the town, etc...) and differences and disputes between current residents (some want the shuttle port while others want the cloning facility...and boths sides want their perk NOW)

Being on when each citizen feels you should be on dealing with all of this stuff (you know what I mean...kind of like how we treat the devs when our questions don't get answered RIGHT NOW )

The main problem is, an unelected politician gets NOTHING out of his skills. And I don't need politician skills to deal with people. The problem is, when you're not in power, you have NOTHING to give to a city any other guy can't. And you can be sure that's an argument Mayors will hammer in the heads of people. Once a city gets a Master Politician, there's no reason to switch to another.

Negociating skills won't make any difference, you don't need to be a politician to negotiate, heck, a lot of negotiating is going on in all servers and nobody is a politician yet.

Setting the taxes won't make any difference either, there are only two way to setup taxes: that they pay for the city upkeep or that they don't; Whether you get the money off buidling taxes or sales taxes, people will get to pay anyway. Some tuning might be doable there, but it's the Mayor who'll get to learn the system. I'm guessing the first Mayors will stay mayors a long time.

Best way to deal with the tall guys is to give them incentives to lick the ground. And dont look down on me that way youre not THAT taller.

I have given up hunting and have spent the last week as city planner, only leaving the future city to move my personal items out to the city. I have been basically campaigning the entire time as to my dream for the city now and in the future. I have been the go between learning all that i can about cities, militia and officials.

I sure hope they elect me.
