Politician FAQ v1.0

Basic Information:

Q: How do I become a politician?
A: First off, you need to collect 500 apprenticeship points. Once you gain these, you must find an NPC trainer. NPC trainers can be found in the capital cities of the three major planets; Naboo, Corellia, and Tatooine. To find the capital city on your planet, select capital on the drop down menu on the planetary map.

Q: Now that I am a politician, how do I get experience?
A: Currently the only way to get experience as a politician is to get votes. If you run for mayor, each vote you gain is the equivalent of 100 experience points. At the end of the week, the votes get counted up, and you get your experience.

Q: Is there an experience cap?
A: Yes, but it is rather insignifigant. It is 20x, or in other words, 20,000 experience for a novice politician. A Novice Politician will probably never cap unless he runs for mayor in a city with over 200 citizens, and gets 200 votes.

Q: Will I get experience if no one runs against me?
A: Yes, you get experience for all the votes you get, regardless of if there is someone running against you or not.

Q: Will I get experience from the votes that default to the Incumbent?
A: Yes, you get expierence regardless of how you got the votes. The votes that default to the Incumbent are no different, they yield the same 100 experience each.

Q: How do I run for mayor?
A: To run for mayor, you must be a citizen of the city you wish to run in. Once you declare your residency, enter the City Hall, locate the voting terminal, and register to run. Good luck!

Q: How do people vote for Mayor?
A: There is a city voting terminal inside the city hall that is accessible for all citizens to vote from.

Q: What are these city ranks I heard of?
A: There are five ranks of cities, and the rank of your city is determined based on population, and in turn determines the radius of your city. The rank of your city also determines what kind of structures you may have and the amount of decorations, mission terminals, and skill trainers your city may have. Keep in mind that only a politician with certain skill boxes will be able to place certain structures, even if your city meets the rank requirement. The current ranks are these, but they are changing soon;

Starting and Managing a City

Q: How can I start my own city?
A: You must obtain a deed to a city hall from an architect. Once you place the city hall, it can not be redeeded, so choose your spot wisely. I strongly suggest you survey for good spots until you find one you like, keeping in mind that eventually your city can grow to have a radius of 450m. Once you place the deed, you will be prompted to enter a name for your city. If you don’t like the name you chose, you can change it later on.

Q: I tried to place my City Hall and I was not allowed due to cap. What does this mean?
A: Currently there are caps on the amount of cities each planet can have. As of now, the caps are 10 cities on Naboo, 10 on Corellia, 10 on Tatooine, 25 on Rori, 25 on Talus, 25 on Lok, and 25 on Dantooine. There are plans by the development team to not have your city count towards the cap until it reached a city level of level so when you first place your city, it will not be counted against the total number allowed. Also, these hard caps will be lifted in time, just be patient.

Q: How do I get more citizens in my city?
A: As a mayor and a politician, it is your job to promote your city. Once people begin to come and live in your city, they can become citizens by placing a house and declaring their residence at that location. All citizens are entitled to vote and run for mayor (if they are a politician). You will be required to have at least 10 citizens in your city within 24 hours.

Q: What happens if my city doesn’t have 10 citizens in 24 hours?
A: If your city fails to meet the criteria of 10 citizens in the first 24 hours, the city hall will be destroyed, along with your city, without any reimbursement.

Q: What kind of taxes can I charge?
A: There are currently four taxes you can set in your city from your city management terminal. Income tax takes a designated amount of money you set from each citizen each week. Property tax takes money from the maintenance pool of structures in your city, and is based on a percent. Sales tax taxes the sales of items on vendors. It is based on a percent and makes items look more expensive then they are. For example, if you are selling something for 10k on a vendor, and there is a 10% sales tax, that item will appear for 11k. 10k goes to the crafter, 1k goes to the city. The final tax you can charge is a travel tax, which is a fixed amount you can add to the price of travel tickets.

Q: What do taxes do? Can I use them?
A: Taxes go into the city treasury, and can only be removed by the mayor in small amounts and an email is sent to every citizen when said transaction occurs. The money in the treasury goes towards paying the maintenance on various civic structures. It is recommended you leave the money there, as maintenance can get rather high and you will need every credit you can get.

Q: What do City Specializations do?
A: City Specializations offer various bonuses to your city. All politicians, except masters, can only have ONE specialization in effect in their city at each time. They all cost different amounts, and in turn offer different bonuses.
--Sample Rich - 70k cr / week Sampling in the city provides 20% more resources and a 10% greater chance of finding resources.
--Manufacturing Center - 50k credits / week Crafting done in a 'Manufacturing Center' earns a 10% bonus to prototype assembly results, significantly reducing the chance of failures.
--Research Center - 125k credits / week Any experimentation done within a 'Research Center' is enhanced. A 15% bonus to the final result roll is added during the experimentation phase of crafting.
--Clone Lab - 80k credits / week The cost of clone insurance in a city with the 'Clone Lab' specialization is reduced by 20%.
--Improved Job Market - 80k credits / week Missions taken in a city with an 'Improved Job Market' grant a 20% increase to their rewards.
--Entertainment District - 80k credits / week Entertainer healing is 10% more effective in a 'Red Light District'.
--Medical Center - 80k credits / week Medical healing is 10% more effective in a 'Medical Center'.
--Stronghold - 150k credits / week A 'Stronghold' has trained its militia members to the peak of their abilities in the methods of tactical defense. Militia members in a 'Stronghold' get a 50 point bonus to all defense rolls against other players.
--Industrial Society - 200k cr / week An 'Industrial Society' gains the bonuses of both the 'Manufacturing Center' and 'Research Center' specializations. Master politicians get this.
--Scientific Society - 175k cr / week A 'Scientific Society' gains the bonuses of both the 'Medical Center' and 'Entertainment District' specializations. Master politicians get this.

Q: When can I use specializations?
A: You can put one specialization in effect once your city reaches rank 3. The popular assumption that a Master Politician can enact two specializations is incorrect. The Master Politician specs that you get combine others into one, so you cannot have two specializations, just one that uses the modifiers of two.

Q: What is a City Militia?
A: The City Militia is essentially the police force of the city. The militiamen are given three commands; /citywarn /cityban and /citypardon. Militia members are responsible for defending their city and enforcing rules agreed upon by the citizens and mayor by the use of these tools.

--/citywarn - The /citywarn command Warns the player to leave the city right away! Warned players become attackable by the militia. The TEF from /citywarn lasts 5 minutes. If a warned player is outside the city radius, they may not attack or be attacked by militia. Note that normal PvP rules apply, so Imperials will always be able to attack Rebels and vice versa, regardless as to the state of /citywarn.
--/cityban- Bans players from civic structures and prevents them from using the shuttleport. Contrary to popular belief this command does not prevent people from entering your city.
--/citypardon- This commands unbans a banned player.

Q: What is Grant Zoning Rights?
A: Grant Zoning Rights allows a mayor to essentially "lock down" a city so that he or she can play the role of an urban planner and prevent unwanted structures. The Mayor can /grantzoningrights to someone, and those rights last for 24 hours or until the mayor removes them with the same command. In order for this to work, you have to be OUTSIDE, INSIDE your city. You cannot be in a structure. If for some reason this does not work, you can always place the structure for the person wishing to become a part of your city and /transferowner.

Q: What are the different skills?
A: The politician has 4 different branches; fiscal policies, martial policies, civic policies, and city customization. Fiscal policies deal with money and travel, martial policies deal with militia and combat/death, civic policies deal with city necessities like hospitals and cantinas, and city customization allows you to add new decorations to your city.

Q: How much do skills cost?
A: Tier 1 skills require 1000 experience each, tier 2 skills require 2000 experience each, their 3 skills require 5000 experience each, and tier 4 skills require 10,000 experience each. Novice and Master cost 500 and 620 apprenticeship, respectively.

Q: What do I get at Novice Politician?

Keep in mind that in order to place the structures you gain the ability to place in this branch your city must be at the proper rank.

Q: What do I get for climbing the Martial Policy branch?
A: For this branch you get the title War Master. At Martial Policy I you get the ability to create a militia. At Martial II you get the ability to place a Cloning Facility, and you also get the city specialization Cloning Lab (20% discount on insurance costs). Q: What do I get for climbing the City Customization branch?
A: Rank IV gives you the title Urban Planner. At Custom I you can place statues and streetlamps. At Custom II you can place fountains. At Custom III you can place small and medium gardens. At Custom IV you can place large gardens and exotic gardens. Everything in this branch is craftable by an Architect.

Great information, thanks!

My only problem is that this is a little hard to read. Constructive criticism for the next update:

Serif text (letters with those little feet on them that are usually used in books) is much harder to read on a computer screen than sans-serif text (no little feet, just like the default forum font). Personally, I also hate light-text-on-a-dark-background, but since the forum design forces it on us, the default white text really is the most legible. Using a little color to highlight section titles is great (as long as it provides enough contrast with the backgroud), but having 6 different text colors makesall thathelpful info much harder to scan.

As far as post legibility goes, the default posting settings are the most readable combination, adding color or making text size larger is best only for emphasizing small amounts of text, not entire posts.

Sorry if this sounds rude, just trying to be helpful. I'm a web design nerdandinternet typography is kind of my thing. You did a great job putting together all this info, and it would be perfect if it was only a little easier on the eyes!

I didn't use serif font

As for the colors, I like them, personally. Bold white for questions, green for answers. Makes it easy to disntiguish between the two.

Oh, sorry, serif isn't the name of any one font, it's a type of font. So in the board font selection, these are the serif fonts:

Courier New
Garamond

As far as the colors go, if you like them, fine. Just letting you know that the green is too low contrast for me to read well. Something higher contrast (like the default white) is just easier on the eyes and therefore much faster to scan. You could just make the questions bold and the answers not bold, that's really enough difference.

Feel free to ignore me, I was just making a suggestion. Like I said, I'm a web designer, and my main specialties are typography and useability, so sometimes that makes me a little too picky.

Thanks again for putting all this info in one place.

Hard to read? **edit**, just how thick are your glasses? (I wear glasses so it's not a slam to all that do)

Very readable IMO. Great job.

I'd like to see some space between the city ranks (the next rank blends in with the list of available items from the previous size). Nice work on the FAQ

I'd also have to agree that the colors are all over the place... it may be fun for some people just to flame people who have complained, but it would probably be more productive to make them a little more traditional. Like a color for the questions, white for the answers, and leave it at that... right now it seems glaring to me (just my two cents ).

How exactly is it blending (more info would be helpful as perhaps a color change could fix it). I used a light grey for the additions, and a bold, dark blue, for the rank name.

Just putting the spaces back in would fix it. Take a look at the original again (it's still a sticky) for a suggestion same goes for the colors on the original, they were fine to me.
