Thread: Merchant Tents Poll
If you're part of a well-designed city and your vendors are advertised on the Planetary Map, clutter shouldn't be a concern.
The tent is more a hindrance than anything, as you'll still have to have a regular house to use for storing goods and for playing the decoration game.
If you want Master Merchants to have a stand-out structure, I'd continue pushing for some sort of awning-type sign that can be placed on an existing house and can house vendors on the porch. The tents are just insulting.
I think merchant tents are lame and ineffective. They have much too large of a footprint for a tiny little hut and the fact that it takes a lot makes it lamer still. Why would I ever use a tent instead of a small house? They have virtually the same footprint! If it had a smaller footprint and used a vendor slot instead of a property lot it would be worthwhile
I think they need to add a Commercial Center structure for Master Merchants

I hope for some kind of shopping center that looks dramatically different than a large house, but has the same space inside to offer lots of vendors as well as chairs or benches, maybe even a fountain. This would be at Master Merchant, of course. I see this as a private structure for player cities only, similar to player cantinas.
Of course, ideally, there would be different levels of tents for merchants, with higher level ones actually being aesthetically pleasing
It would also be nice, as already mentioned, to see a smaller footprint on these, that would enable a more compact marketplace, with the feel of a real bazaar.
The idea of a mall structure for master merchants is pretty appealing too. Anything to add incentives to a profession that exists only to compliment other professions.
As it stands you have to have merchant skill efficiensy 4: structures to place a merchant tent. This really puts a damper on the crafters and on our citys. I'm sure my city is not the only one that would like to have its merchants use the merchant tents to make a market district. It really sould be set at a lvl that if the crafter can place a vendor they sould be able to place a merchant tent or maybe have novice merchant to place, thats my oppion anyways. So I'd really like to see what other politicians feel about this issue.
Should the standards for merchant tents be lowered?
My vote is YES,very much so.

you might want to get a merchant to place a tent and /transferstructure if you want. It might work.
it takes only 1 lot. I think it should be kept so people with higher level merchant have a reason to pick up merchant skill ![]()
I think it is fine the way it is. A Merchant can grant anyone admin rights and they can place a vendor in the tent. I currently have a vendor in a merchant tent I don't own.
I think it is good to make things more difficult. Who wants to see hundreds of merchant tents around.
hehe.. I personally don't mind.. I currently made my tent available to anyone who needs them. Plus a city should have some sort of merchant person in your town
we use it to planetary advertise until we can register our city.
Perhaps if the footprint were actually 1x1, like the structure, and if there were some sort of storage available inside, then it would be worth it. As of right now, there is nothing a merchant tent offers that a medium house can't do better.
Joshie,
The advantage of the merchant tent is that it looks different. Say you have a lot of foot traffic coming through town, people will notice a merchant tent much more easily then a sign on someones house. People will know that a merchant tent is filled with vendors and that is a place to buy things.
True a medium house can do the same and on a larger scale. The house may be lost in all the clutter of a city. Plus it is nice to have some different structures to spice things up.
I am all for master or high level skill boxes being required for merchant tent, cantina, med center. I think dabbling is fine, but the master need some kind of reward for their dedication.
