Thread: Sales taxes examined
Hmmm....
I don't have any sales taxes in my city at the moment, so to encourage commerce.
I just make up for it by increasing income and property taxes. ![]()
It's called bait-and-switch. Politicians do it all the time.

I think that many misintrepret the mindset of the consumer. Are you gonna buy billy's composite armor because it's in your player city, or are you gonna go 2 planets away to joe's armor vendor because he sells composite that is 15% better...
I'm just offering this whole debate up because i think it is moderately ridiculous to expect the crafter base of a city to pay for the perks of the entire city. The idea that crafters *need* to be in a player city is not really soundly founded. well over half my business is from offworlders. if i put a vendor in a player city, you're adding an extra shuttle trip right there for them, since there's no starport available in player cities.
I guess i just dont see what the appeal of the player cities are to crafters, as far as maintaining vendors in one. All the sales tax does is hurt the lower end crafter who are working their way up. Experimentation bonus? I could move into a city, declare residence, pay my income tax (lot tax), make my products, then hoof it to the old school player cities (the various townships that sprouted up around major starports) and list my items tax free.
Maybe im just jaded in my thinking that player cities are a novelty, not a requirement for a businessman...there must be a happy medium somewhere :/
ok I presented on of the first arguements in this thread... against the poster...
I am all for sales tax... for this reason.
I am a merchant, a crafter, a miner, and a mayor. just to give you a little background
#1 to tell every crafter to reduce their prices so the consumer doesn't have to pay sales tax just gives them yet another tax to pay... the resident crafters are already paying citizen and property taxes. If you as the crafter want to do that... by all means go ahead... But I will not ask it of you.
#2 My sales have actually gone UP since I registered my city and vendors. And I sell resources in bulk... 100k at a time for 200k.... buyer pays 210k and has ZERO complaints about it.... I actually did have someone asking if I raised my prices once... I told him no, just that the vendor was now in a city with a 5% sales tax.
#3 traffic in my city has more than doubled since last thursday... two reasons I think, I pixked a cool name and I registered the city. I've had more unsolicited people requesting to join our city, I've had more sales, etc etc
so basically what I'm getting at is, if you don't want to pay or have your clients pay sales tax don't live in a city... if your business doesn't suffer for it, all the better for you. I for one can tell you, I do live in a city and it has a 5% sales tax and my business hasn't suffered for it one bit
