Thread: Militia Rank Suggestion
First of all excuse me If my comprehension of the militia is flawed, as my entire post is based on this assumption:
There is one rank of militia and they all get the same abilities for /ban /warn /zoning rights /ban
I believe this to be true - if it's not then the rest of my post makes no sense ![]()
I have a very fundamental problem with the militia and it is... that.... /grantZoningRights is one of THE most important abilities for a LOTof future cities, it is the kind of command that you want to be placed in the hands of the mayor and perhaps a small group of trusted city members (whether this is guild members, or friends you trust, or players who join the city that you end up be-freinding)
This sounds just spiffy.....apart from the fact that you Might really want to have most or at least some more of your cities combat orientated citizens in the militia to help you defend the city.
So your stuck between a rock and a hard place. That random person who just joined your city wants to help the city out by joining the militia - and YOU WANT to give him this chance, it will be a way for them to socialise and help out......but at the same time, you can't quite trust everyone who joins your city and give them all the ability to ban, warn and give zoning rights - the opportunity for griefing while your away or asleep is just incredible.
The militia NEEDS ranks. In my opinion at least 3. Call them whatever you will...this is just an example
Militiaman: the backbone of the city defence. The guys who are there to defend the city against the tyranny of evil. They have NO commands available to them.
Militia Captain: In overall charge of the defensive aspects of the city militia- with abilities to match. Able to /ban /warn and /pardon
Militia General:Responsible for everything that goes on within city limits - overseeing the construction of buildings aswell as the defence of the city. Able to /ban /warn /pardon AND /grantZoningRights.
For myself, this is a much needed addition,as a potential mayor I need to be able to go to sleep and haveABSOLUTE trust in the people who are able to grant zoningrights, and at the same time - i need to know we have enough militiamen tooust any troublemakers should they need to bewarned out of town.
If this is an old suggestion then i couldn't find it - so excuse me if im wrong about militia, or this has been suggested many times..... If it IS a new suggestion - Please let me know what you think.

I don't think members of the militia can grant zoning rights, as that appears to be a skill granted to a Politician. I believe they have /citywarn and /cityban.
according to v2.0 of the player cities thread on the test center forums they can

A mayor with Civic Policy I can set the city to "require zoning rights." When a city requires zoning rights no one may place a structure in the city without permission. The mayor and the militia can grant a person permission to place structures for 24 hours with /grantZoningRights. Using /grantZoningRights again on someone that already has rights to your city will revoke the rights.
I like the idea gives cooperation more and makes sure that not too many ppl can abuse their powers.
It is a double edge sword. Right now the city allows two new kinds of people Mayors and Militia members. If you turn on zoning rights, think of what a pain it would be if only 1 person could grant zoning rights. If you can do it without the other person being around, not a huge deal, but if they need to be near you, it is. I persoally would like to have a few people be able to grant and remove the rights, not just me.
So the devs had 1 choice. What other type of person associated with the city can we give the ability to, Militia members.

Oh, yeah, that's not good.
hehe thats what i thought
It only really occured to me as our guild started to think about the militia. We want people to come to our city and move into our city - we would very much like new people that we don't know to to get involved in city events - and the militia is a good place to start.
As it stands right now - we cannot afford to give that access to anyone we don't trust 120% - your entire city reputation is at stake.
Even if they only had the abilityto/warn or /ban - all it would take isa very small group of trouble makers within your city militia to wreak havoc against visitors to your city and ruin your reputation as a place to trade / visit.
I believe that when people start to think of the risks involved in letting people join the militia, we'll find it to be a mostly un-used feature. It will be reserved for a select group of people who are trusted by the mayor to give zoning rights.
I dont' think any politicians or devs want that to happen...... I certainly hope they don't ![]()
I doubt this even came up on Test Center as most of the people there are trying to help improve the game...you can probably trust most people on test center. I can't say i trust everyone in-game, which is unfortunate but still sadly true.

I agree and disagree with you. I agree - It's true that the mayor needs more people to help out with the administration of the city. I said that in my post. But right now - the city members who are just volunteering to help out defending the city are also getting every administration ability available. There needs to be seperation.
I disagree - the devs didn't have 1 choice. I just presented a 2nd here....im sure there are others. this is the best i can come up with.
But I do think you need to read my suggestion again....im not sure yougrasped whatmy thougts are. Im NOT talking about removing /grantZoningRights from everyone but the mayor. Im talking about seperation of duties. Which results in differing ranks WITHIN the militia
We shouldn't have 1 group of people who are there to both defend the city AND have almost "admin rights" for the city.
We NEED a seperation. that is my suggestion.
hehe - came on a bit strong in that last post
im defensive of my idea
Anyway - i'll stop spamming my own thread now and go to bed..... I look forward to any other comments people might have.
g'night folks
These commands need to be broken up, and I like the way you have them. It allows for mayors to hire people without "giving them the keys to the city" which is a good thing. By having ranks (or at least breaking up the commands) you can get a group of people to enforce your city's rules more freely without as much worry and hire someone who can help with the mayor's duty around town.
