I just got novice pistoleer and I have a decent FWG5. But I still suck at killing the more difficult things. For example, I was out in the desert and I ran across a squill and I would think I should be able to kill him but he still is much stronger than me. So will I get better and actually able to take down the bigger animals or will I be like this no matter how high I get in the profession.

I semi-recently got master pistoleer. AndI really am more powerful than when I had Pistol 4. The increase in weapon quality should not be underestimated, but there are some things that make you better.

The speed increases are the biggest outright offensive bonuses you get. You'll start shooting regular shots at one second with any pistol, and eventually start shooting special shots at one second, greatly increasing damage output.

After the accuracy bonuses, I hardly ever miss with special moves, even with a DX2.

Stopping Shot and Fanshot increase your damage output.

Melee Defense remains a useful 'escape' move, or just a way to get a 5 second respite from getting attacked.

However, if a really tough critter gets in your face, or if you have several npc's (or players) with blasters shooting at you, you're still dead meat. This means you've got to keep from getting hit in the first place. The easiest way is with a pet (animal or faction). Against one or two dumb animals, you can still use warning shot.

I'd say about half of my own improvement in PVE is due to figuring out better tactics. And about half is due to the skill points spent in the pistoleer profession. And I acknowledge that I am still far less uber than BH, CH, or Commando.
