If I bleed a NPC, back off, and watch them bleed to death, I get no XP for the kill, no faction, nor am I able to loot the corpse. If I rush in and finish off the last 500 ham or so I get XP for the full 9000 ham kill, plus full faction and looting. Is this by design or is it a bug?

You aren't staying close enough to kill. If you stay within 75 meters you will get it.

I believe it is by design.
The bleed damages the ham, but you only get XP for your actual damage (not bleed damage).
Use the bleed to help you kill the critter quicker. If you want to maximise your XP, don't use bleeds.

Bleeds don't count as damage, for the purpose of xp and kill credit and stuff.
You don't get less damage for doing them, but you don't get more.
If you're in a zerg group and rampantly whoring for xp, then don't bleed, since you're better off spending your time shooting and causing as much damage as possible.

bleeds dont soak xp. to get xp you only need to deal 1 non bleed damage and you get full xp.

I'm not so sure on this issue, I know that back when I was killing Baz Nitches I would get varriations of 4kXP, sometimes high 3k's and sometimes low 4k's. Andwhenkilling Bols I also notice differations in the ammount of XP I get, or did before I capped it out.

I have to lean more to the distance explanation as I usually was backing off to 90-100 meters. But not totally. The only time the XP varies is when the creature is already damaged before I attack. I still think there something in there, though, on having to be attacking when it actually dies though as in faction missions, I would bleed the 2 blues and work on the white. If the blues died before I finished the white, I wouldn't get the XP there either. Unless I could get a shot in near death.
