Thread: The Origin of the 'Republic Blaster' By WinterRose

Those of you that tend to pay attention to such things see that it's the little blaster that Amidala pulled from her desk arm to capture the Nemoidians. A snubnosed version of the one she had earlier in the movie, that the prop folks made from a Barbeque Lighter. You've likely seen the stats on this one. Or at least you will if you follow the link above. 4.5 speed? Damage that doesn't even break 100? Average speed? What kind of insulting drek is this? Even if the gun WERE working, who would use the thing? In any case... I decided I'd look that weapon up to find out what it actually is. Here's what I found:
The Merr-Sonn Model Q2 Hold Out Blaster
(Typical Hold Out Blaster Pistol)
"Just as Blas-Tech is best known for its DL-44 Heavy Blaster, Merr-Sonn dominates the hold out blaster market with the Q2. Lightweight, elegant, and functional, the Merr-Sonn Q2 is an almost expected accessory for the diplomat or noble who is unsure of his or her allies. The Q2 design is so widely favored that SoroSuub licensed the design from Merr-Sonn for its own nearly identical model. SosoSuub also used the design as a basis of its heavier ELG line of blasters."
Wow... I'm underwhelmed. THIS is the cert we get for becoming a master Pistoleer? A lousy frelling HOLD-OUT pistol? Going by the numbers here... The Q2 (in RPG terms) is defined as doing 3D4 damage to a target. The ELG by SoroSuub is the longer barrelled cousin of the Republic Blaster. It does 3D6 damage. Now. Just to give you a comparison of damage
The Merr-Sonn Q2 (Republic Blaster) = 3D4
The SoruSuub ELG-3A (Amidala's Pistol) = 3D6
The Blas-Tech DH-17 Blaster Pistol = 3D6-1
The Blas-Tech DL-18 Blaster Pistol = 3D6
The Blas-Tech DL-44 Heavy Pistol = 3D8
The Tenloss DX-2 Disruptor Pistol = 2D8 (Originally a Disruptor, not an Acid Weapon)
The Malaxan Firepower Inc. FWG-5 = 3D8 (Originally a Flechette Smart-Pistol, not a Heater)
The Merr-Sonn 'Power 5' Heavy Pistol = 3D8
Scout Blaster (undefined maker) = 3D6
The Oriolanis Defense Systems Striker Projectile Pistol = 2D6
Do you see what I'm getting at here? We've been given an underpowered hold-out relic from the Old Republic as the earned weapon for Master Pistoleer. (For those of you unfamiliar with the term, a hold-out pistol is the one you keep in your ankle holster in case your primary weapon is ganked. It's a BACKUP pistol.) I have to say I'm pretty upset about it. I really do hope that once the new guns come in, we'll start to see some of the ones I mentioned in my thread at:

Thanks. And if you know where I should be posting these gun ideas so a Dev can see em, do let me know so I can go ahead and do it.

My Republic Blaster is a 70-200 dly 1.9, not that bad if you keep in mind it is energy AP1 based.

you mean I can use it, all I have to do is killing Imps ?
For true for true ?
Aye, the rebel theory is bunk. Lame, even if it were true. A shame.. It looks like a very cool weapon. I really want to see it fixed. That and my DX2 will be my weapons of choice, whatever the stats.
Weren't hold-out blasters for a very limited number of uses? Been awhile since I did any SW RPGing..
Yeah, DiLune, you are completely and totally incorrect.
Many people have the certification. No one can use it, and it has nothing to do with faction or rank.
It SHOULD be strengthened some more and the certification fixed and reserved for masters though.
That's hilarious anyway, a DL 44 is one of the heavier hitting pistols in the star wars universe, Han even carried one that he modified to do more damage but at the cost of going through ammo cartidges much faster, and it was placed in the marksman tree at pistol II, let me tell you i was really erked about that one. I carried my DL 44 until i finally just couldn't kill anything with it anymore and had to get a better pistol which ended up being a fwg5.
The number one thing that ticks me off is how weapons in SWG were implemented, ALL blasters are energy weapons that require ammunition, instead we got acid, stun, heat, kinetic, energy, blah blah blah and they don't use ammo which would have been a really nice money sink.
"The standard ranged weapon of both military personnel and civilians in the galaxy, the blaster pistol fires cohesive bursts of light-based energy called bolts. Blasters come in a variety of shapes and sizes, delivering a wide range of damage capability. Many blaster pistols have stun settings that incapacitate a target, rather than inflicting physical damage. While blasters do deliver a searing concussive blast, they can be foiled by magnetic seals and deflector shields."
"The basic blaster technology of intensifying a beam of light into a deadly bolt is scalable, and largely the same despite the differences in weapon types and sizes. The interior mechanisms of a tiny hold-out blaster, a blaster pistol, a large blaster rifle, and a turbolaser cannon are based on the same theories and principles. A squeeze of a trigger emits volatile blaster gas into a conversion chamber, where it is excited by energy from the weapon's power source. The agitated gas is then funneled through the actuating blaster module, where it is processed into an intense particle beam. A prismatic crystal focuses the beam, and passes it through a refinement chamber which "galvens" the beam into its final bolt."
Oh and while i'm on the subject this is official star wars canon too,
"Shortly after the Battle of Yavin, a group of Jabba the Hutt's bounty hunters captured Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca in the Hoth system. These hunters were to deliver the Rebel trio to Ord Mantell, where Boba Fett was to take possession and continue the delivery to the Empire. One of the hunters, an arrogant tracker named Skorr, botched the operation and let the Rebels escape. Skorr was killed in the process and Fett was left empty-handed."
Kinda dispels the bounty hunter being a one on one killer/hunter huh?
"Fett's weapon of choice is a sawed-off BlasTech EE-3 rifle."
Yep and they get lightning canons in SWG, go figure.
"The two formed a working partnership that would last years, and Fett even served as best man at Dengar and Manaroo's wedding. "
More canon that was ignored and has left the perpetuation of the idea that bounty hunters always take their marks on one on one and are one man killing machines.
