Good day, gents and ladies! I'm an aspiring Master Ranger/Creature Handler, but I'm also a firm believer that no one should go into the field without some kind of weapon skills. As such, I've taken up Pistoleer! My question to you is: I only have enough skill points for 3 tiers on any one branch in the Pistoleer tree (that's what, 7 skill points?)

I'm eyeing either Techniques for Double Tap & Stopping shot or Grips for Body Shot 3, but I'm open to suggestions on this, and am seeking the counsel of you folks who know more about this than I.

Thoughts?

Go for Double Tap & Stopping shot. This is by far your strongest choice for Damage.

It is true that stopping and fan shots are more powerful, but they target random pools.

But BS3 allows you to target the health pool, which is great for working with pets.

I use to be able to do decent damage to mobs with bleed/bs3.

So if solo PvE is your thing, you may want to consider bs3.

If grouping/PvE is your thing I'd recommend stopping/fan shot.

From my standpoint, the Stances tree is easily your best choice. First, it nets you a considerable increase in speed (+18), which will raise your Damage per Second by an additional 50%. Second, it gives you pistol melee defense1, which will help you get out of a bind while you sick your pet on a creature that aggro'd you accidentally.

You alternatives are not valuable at all. BS3 underperfoms BodyShot2, which you already have. Stopping Shot and a Double Tap both underperform KipUp Shot(which you already have) and they all underperform BS2. The Marksmanship line would then be the next choice, but I wouldn't consider it in the same league as the Stances line for speed.

The only reason I can see to go up the Techniques tree is to get Fan Shot, which would be lots of fun to use on a group of creatures your pet has tied up. But even then, I'm not sure you couldn't get the job done better with the extra speed applied to BS2 rather than a base speed cone firing Fan Shot. But, then again, you only have 12 points to spend, so the point is moot.

Btw, skill points on adv professions go 5 4 3 2 instead of the 2 3 4 5 they were in the basic professions. So if you wanted to get up to Stopping shot you will be spending 12 SP.
