Actually, the best type of pistol is the one that does the most damage to your intended target. Sounds like an obvious statement, but it's one that many people fail to consider. While FWG5's typically offer the best statistics of the non-specialty pistols (ie, Scatter and Launcher), it may not be the best pistol to use against all foes. Picket Longhorns on Dantooine, for example, have protection against heat based attacks, thus your uber FWG5 may not do as much damage as a Scout Blaster.

The best course of action is to carry at least a couple of pistols, so that you can use the one that's best suited to the target you are attacking. At a minimum carry an FWG5 and an energy based pistol (Scout Blaster, DH17, Power 5, SR Combat, etc). As a whole, Scout Blasters seem to be the best choice for energy based pistols, but don't overlook the fact that the SR Combat pistol has AR1 (particularly nice when fighting Picket Longhorns). You may also want to consider carrying a Tangle pistol and a Striker pistol so that you have stun and kinetic damage weapons as well. But, and I repeat, you MUST have at least an FWG5 and a Scout Blaster in your arsenal.

Good Luck!

Good post Altitude25,

Altitude is absolutely right. FWG5 and Scout at a minimum. Ifor when you go novice pistoleer get a DX2 as soon as you can... they do acid damage... having an acid (DX2), heat (FWG5)and energy (Scout) weapon works very well for most mobs.

Good luck!

FWG5 is good for most circumstances, but pay attention to the targets resists [ for PVE ] whenever possible. Sometimes the DX2 is better

Some critters might have incredibly high heat resist [ like GWs & Kimos both have 100% ], but might have low, or no acid resist.

Furthermore, the DX2 has AP1 [ I know that AP vs vulnerabilities are bugged ] and in some circumstances that will outperform the extra damage of the FWG.

Considering equal heat and acid resists:
AP0 - FWG5 +0% DX2 +25%
AP1 - FWG5 -50% DX2 -0%
AP2 - FWG5 -75% DX2 -50%

That's not a bad Scout Blaster. You can find better though. I used to have one that did about 50+-130+ but had an attack speed of 1.3. You can make up for any lost damage with the speed of your weapon. With my fastest weapon (my scout blaster currently) and the skills I have, it looks like I almost never stop firing.

Generally the FWG5 and DX2 are going to get the most use once you have both of them. The Scout is useful though for certain specific creature types which have high resists to Heat and Acid. Pretty much any creature save for the ultra high level mobs(Krayts/Goraxes, etc) will always have a weakness to Heat or Acid, or resist both and be weak to Energy.

Also of note: most of the lower upper level creatures(Rancors, etc) tend to be Acid weak while most of the lower-mid level mobs tend to be Heat weak. This is why, if you solo, you'll find the FWG5 as your primary gun...if you have tons of pets or group a lot to take down high level mobs, you'll probably find yourself leaning more towards a dx2 with occassional uses by the other two guns.

Taking resistances/armor completely out of the equation though...the fwg5 is the "best". But adding in armor and resistances, there really is no perfect gun. This is also, of course, not taking into account the Scatter, Launcher, and currently unusable Republic Blaster. Those three guns either currently have, or showsin the case of the RB, some serious advantages to them, but we are talking Marksman/Pistoleer usable weapons only here.
