I guess I don't really understand the use of fan shot. Stopping shot seems much more effective. Can anyone explain to me how best to use Fan Shot? Does it have some other effect that I am not aware of beyond damage?

Thanks

Very funny. I came here now to post the very same thing. I've been hearing about how great Fan Shot is, now after a couple hours of testing I see it's no better than stopping shot. Actually it's not as good on a whole.

One more thing that's bass Ackwards.

It's actually far more effective than stopping shot. Both of them are random HAM damage, so they don't have any tricks to them. However, with Stopping Shot, you have a high damage attack with a large delay. With Fan Shot, you have a moderately high damage attack with a smaller delay. Combine those, and you'll cause substantially more damage to a target over even two or three shots.

This is also the reason Marksman skills like Kipupare better than Stopping Shot and Fan Shot. They have such a small delay that their moderate damage can hit a target so often that they rack up damage faster.

People are often misled by the large damage numbers Stopping Shot creates into thinking they are killing a target faster. In fact, they're killing it more slowly than they were with DoubleTap.

It is substantially better than Stopping Shot. But it is still no better than any of the Marksman skills, and it takes you 14 skill boxes to obtain it.

Well zerona I beg to differ with you. I just ran it through some tests with many different types of mobs.

Redcon giant ratz, to white con guards.

I repeated this for both skills.

target mob, exactly the same distance away. Led with bleed shot 1 and 2. then spamed Stopping shot till dead. Did the same with Fan Shot.

The damage counts were always alittle higher for stopping shot. And the mob fell quicker using the Stopping shot.

Believe me, I wish I were wrong. All that work for a skill that is as generic as the rest of them.

What is your Pistol Speed Skill +? Any chance you have greater than Master Pistoleer (+74)?

Because I certainly couldn't shoot Stopping Shot near the 1.0sec barrier, which is right where you have to be at for it to ever match the performance of Kip/Fan Shot. At Stances IV, a 1.6scout blastersliced to 1.1 speed would be able to churn out SS's every 2 seconds, while throwing out a FS every 1.2 seconds. Even then, Fan Shot out does SS.

I'd recommend you not use the bleed shot. Maybe it's throwing your perceptionout of whack.

fan shot's shortdelay is a huge bonus compared to stopping shot. i use both but in my experience fan shot is much better being that u can almost get in 2 shots using fanshot to every 1 stopping shot.

both fanshot and stopping shot are very usefull, and i use them both, but since getting fanshot, i would have to go with fanshot being the more useful of the 2.

Fanshot is better if you speed is low, Stopping shot is better if your speed is high. That's all there is to it really.

Don't agree. I was just in game talking to a Master Pistoleer and he feels the same way i do.

Stopping shot is better all round. I don't know about all your figures but in the game where the rubber hits the road fan shot for a top of the line style, isn't that great.

I use a sliced: FW, scout, Dx2.....all top of the line for Starsider.

I'd like to throw a wrench in your assumptions. Stopping shot fires a single shot that has a single chance to miss or hit. Fanshot fires multiple shots that each have their own chances to hit. So I can move around while using fanshot and still hit the target part of the time while if I used the single shot specials I have a very large penalty to miss with only one shot (kind of a shotgun effect.)

Wish there was edit.

Since the Devs upped your defensive bonuse (their chance to miss you) while you are moving around, if you are fighting mobs and NPCs and don't have meat shields in front of you then moving around is pretty much your only chance to stay alive (give them a huge penalty to hit you while we have a +30 to hit while moving and +15 while standing, pretty decent bonuses.)

It depends entirely on a combination of your weapon's speed, and your pistol speed. In general, fan shot does more damage over time, no question. At high speeds, yes, stopping shot "can" do more. You have to work out the figures for yourself, given your weapon and your pistol speed. You can determine which is best, and stick to it.

This is part of the reason why we though every higher up special, as long as it's in the same category of attack type, should ALWAYS be better. Otherwise, it's annoying to spend more points for specials, only to get lower damage (we call that moronic design.)

Well, fan shot has a damage/delay multiplier of 4.0/2.5 and stopping shot 5.0/4.0 (I believe). This means to cap with FS you need a modified pistol delay of 0.4s.I'm assuming no pistol can have a base speed of less than 1s. In order to have 0.4s modified pistol speed with a 1s delay pistol, you have to have +60 speed. You can't have +60 or morepistol speed without either master pistoleer or BH pistol skills, so it's only an issue for masters or BH pistol hybrids. Master pistoleers would need a pistol ofdelay 1.2s or less (+74 speed for master pistol, yes?) before SS became better than FS (not sure about HAM efficiency, though) while master pistol/marksman would need a < 1.49s pistol.

Note though that due to the first shot having no delay, if you can kill the mob with sufficiently few shots, stopping shot is still better even if you aren't capping speed. This might explain why SS seems better in practice in some situations.
