Thread: Carbine dropout, Need Pistoleer advice
I chose the carbine early on b/c i liked the intermediate range you get with it. Worked my way up the carbine tree to 1/2/3/1 and still can barely stay alive on missions solo. Had to get a pet to tank for me while I took forever to kill.
I read how Carbines are supposed to have higher DPS with the speed bug but I will tell you that's soooo wrong. It ignores the fact that carbines have poor accuracy (probably by design when you look at other SW games and how weak carbines always are), DPS only matters if you actually hit your target. Yea, I routinely get 1-1.5k dmg with my carbines using burstshot2 but with no defence skills and huge HAM costs, I am doing BS2/BS2/HEAL/BS2/BS2/HEAL... Good thing I am a CM.
I am now dumping Carbineer slowly as I go up Pistoleer. With master CM and novice scout, I am 11 skill pts short of being able to master pistoleer. I was looking for some suggestions on what would work best, I was thinking 4/2/4/2 or 2/4/4/2 which would leave me with 0 sp.
I would suggest going for something else, Pistoleer on its own is SEVERLY underpowered. I dropped the BH Pistol line and it rendered my Master Pistoleer useless.
All the great things you've seen or heard about pistols were BH/Pistoleers dont ever forget that.
First off I hace to say this, you simply didn't advance far enough up the carbineer tree to experience the speed issue. (Carbineer solo is more than a little screwed atm, even at master they don't cap unless they have BH carbine as well)
Given that they are going to be "adjusting" the pistoleer skill/speed progression I'd hold off making any final decisions, but as it stands now, I'd go for 2-2-4-4. Or as another idea, drop novice scout - I'm not sure what it is doing for you atm.

this is exactly true. i never wanted to go bh/pistoleer and i desperatly want to drop bh pistol now but i cant and still be in any way combat effective. pistoleer is not viable on its own if want to be a combat toon imo.
i believe smuggler/pistoleer to not be of any help also, with recent nerfs/breaks and no mods that template just aint getting it done either.
I'm a master pistoleer, and I can definitely say that if I was only a master pistoleer, I'd be having a ton of trouble soloing much of anything, if I wasn't also a doctor and had a cowardly gurreck to help tank for me. My basic strategy is to buff up my gurreck and myself, have a hotkey to pop on my armor instantly when I need it and then use my gurreck as much as possible to absorb damage. I can tank quite well as long as I don't get smacked my mind too much. I raised my mind and secondaries to maximum so with armor, buffs and heals I'm about as effective a tank as is possible in this game right now.
As it is right now, I totally agree with the previous posts that carbineers really do need to become a very high level before they are effective. The power curve for carbine rises slowly and then quickly goes up as you near master.
As for BH/pistoleer, they can solo based on the fact that they can do a lot of damage in a very short period, but for soloing, a combination of pistoleer/CH/doctor is one of the best choices at the moment.
Problems are :
- you need to be Master Pistoleer to shoot fast enought to avoid dmg limitation
- you DO NOT have to be Master CH to be able to call a VERY efficient pet (CH 3 2 0 0 allows you to call a Graul Mauler, best pet overall so far. At master lvl I can call 2 of them but just useless)
- with BH speed mods, I would be a god and would be able to use LLC. Pointless.
The game mechanism is totally broken by BH speed mods. As long as Speed isn't capped in anyway, you MUST be BH to be viable enought in all situations.
On a personnal note, I am waiting for the dev team to act about this REAL problem (speed mods and speed cap) to balance the game. If it is not done, my only goal in this game will be to rush BH pistol line and bother every overt ppl till a real game cames out. Atm, this game reminds me the Diablo 2 on line fiasco with cheats and kills by kids all night long.
Without any risk, there is no fun. Playing a BH right now is not fun since you almost can't be killed. I don't want to play that game.
I am using novice scout for creature harvesting. I alternate novice scout with novice artisan depending upon whether I need to survey or I want to hunt for components. Can't harvest without novice scout and can't survey/sample without novice artisan and as a medic I HAVE to be able to do both, though not necessarilyat the same time. Its sooo retarded that medics have to craft but get no harvesting or survey/sample skills. Novice lvl skill is plenty and should be granted to medics, even if only at master Medic lvl.
I am using a cockroach (k, fine, rock beetle) as my tank which works well most of the time, light armor lets him resist damage and I heal as needed.
Really appreciate the input. THNX!
One more thing, I am a CM first, the Carbineer--now Pistoleer is secondary. As such I am support personel for any group but solo frequently especially while surveying--boring enough for me doing it, would never ask anyone to seriously join me while I am doing it.
I am already to pistol 4 after one DAY! Carbineer 4 took a week, of course I am more experienced now and can afford a better weapon.
Pistol is definetly faster than carbine and though you can argue DPS issues till your blue in the face, I need my combat moves to clear before I can heal, and it DEFINIETELY clears faster with pistol. That means I can heal myself and group faster and more often as needed.
The range of carbines makes more sense for where I should be positioned in a group during combat, but the speed of pistols is allowing me to do my job better, that is, keep my ppl alive.
