what are these points useful for?

Going to deep space.

I believe every time you go to deep space it costs 300k prestige (which is earned at the same rate as starship combat xp, but only once you get master).

how dumb. i would rather them be like FP and tradeable fer somthing... :/ downer.

I would tend to agree, and perhaps that's planned for the future. For the moment though, that's it.
