Thread: Space is squishing me!

Does anyone feel the space sectors in JTL are way too cramped? I always suspected so,since it is possible to fly from one corner of the space box to the other in a couple minutes, but when I saw the following view from my ship it just seemed plain silly.

The base below my wing is an imperial base, the base in the lower left is a rebel base, and the base in the upper right is a neutral base. You can see all three at once! If the Imperials want to crack down on the Rebels they can startby taking out the base operating just 2km away from them...Anyway I think the space sectors could use a massive scaling up, especially since the devs did such a good job making the planet surfaces feel roomy (even though they are actually very under-scaled as well).

i noticed that too, the reb station should at least be disguised or something so the imps don't "see" it (like in an asteroid field or something).

i also noticed that when i launch to space from tat i always seem to be "at the limit of my sublight engines" which seems soo strange to me as i am only 8.5k from the station.

Never really felt cramped while up in space.

I understand what you are saying, with things being all close together in some areas. But in the devs defense.... If space stations were twice as far apart, many people would complain about excess travel times between stations in space and would be pissed off about that.

Somewhat agree, however, that's what the hyper points are for. They all get you within 5k or so, and with a tier 4 ship, that's not very far. I can travel 5k in about 20-30 seconds.

The problem with doubling the size of the sectors would be server load as far as spawn is concerned. I think the complaining would come in regards to having to travel 15k to find a decent spawn point for xp. The POI system takes care of that somewhat, but if it's camped by several others, more POI locations would be needed, more spawns on the server, thus causing more lag than what we see now.

Any other thoughts?

actually, i sent in a ticket to a csr about the sublight engine message, he said its just a message bug and shouldnt be happening, he said that it in fact has nothing to do with ur ship and just ignore it for now.

Message appears when you are getting close to 8000 or -8000 on any coordinate plane..... It's definitly not a bug. Think that CSR didn't really read what you were saying or gave you a generic response based on a few key phrases in your CSR ticket.

Not to get into CSR complaints, but I am pretty sure when you fill out a CSR ticket it gets a generic response based off of key words/phrases it picks out in your ticket. More than once I've gotten responses right away that had nothing to do with the question I'd asked.

Cramped Space

Yeah I could agree with bigger space and more jump points. Of course, we could also just slow all the ships down so they don't cover as much "ground" as quickly. That wouldn't change the distance between stations but it would make the distance "feel" farther.

The thing is, I seem to recall one of the devs saying some time back that they weren't going to make the same mistake they made with the ground game by making all the planet surfaces the same size, and were instead going to scale the space sectors as much as necessary to accomodate all the content. It turns out they didn't follow that strategy at all since the space sectors are the same size as the planet surfaces (with the exception of the Z axis).

The problem that this causes is that things like space stations and spaceships are much bigger than anything you would find on aplanet, and therefore it creates that cramped look that I showed in my screenshot. If you were to put a Super Star Destroyer (the largest ship during this timeline) into a sector and kept it to scale it would reach from one side of the space box to the other. I don't think slowing down the ships would help either, since the ships are already moving unrealistically slow as it is (I think someone calculated they are slower than a WWII fighter plane).
