Thread: Asteroid Fields

Yesterday I had jumped from Dath into the Tatoo system and was approaching the Tatooine space station from Desert Sands when I passed by the asteroid field that contains all the commerce raiders. I had some free time so I fly in and start shooting down the Z95's. While I was in there, I was really trying my best to completely avoid the asteroids, even though colliding with them doesn't really seem to do much, and I was thinking to myself how much better it would be if they DID cause damage on collision. Not only for players but the enemy ships as well. It would make fighting or maneuvering in there a lot more challenging (at least at first thought that's how it seems like it would be).

I had that line of C3PO's stuck in my head, about the odds of successfully navigating an asteroid field and thought that would make a decent badge. Maybe based off a waypoint at the center of the field.

Not sure if they need to do damage but they need to be a lot bigger and denser, would be good if you could use them like cover.

I completly agree not only would this be more realistic and give a better feel for the game but it would also add more strategy to dogfights. Right now running into an asteroid doesnt do anything which seems kind of ... well STUPID. They should make it so running into asteroids do some damage so that players will think twice about where their going and show some piloting skills by dodging and weaving

Well, they do through off your course a little bit and can stop you. Which in a large ship like the YT-1300 can be really bad... since it takes forever to accelerate.

Also.... having them damage you if you collide with them is dangerous to mess with. If someone lags or gets choppy in space, they are screwed.

How would you like it if you were chasing after a commerce raider through an asteroid field and suddenly your connection lagged and you blew up on an asteroid?

There is a reason there is no damaging collision in space. If you want 100% realism or collisions, don't play an online game. Connection problems really limit how much they can do with collisions.

better yet, dont do the damage thing....but make some of the asteroids interactive.....like when han solo flew through the center of it into the big worm thingy.....i think thatd BE AWESOME to fly right through an asteroid center and maybe even see an untargetable worm try to take my ship out.

How about a Theme Park located on a large asteroid where you have to land? Get out and fight some creatures with loots, etc. Get out your oxygen mask like Han and the crew in EP V.

Thats why I say damagefor Overt let the PVEr have no damage taken. Most people dont shooterPVPwith dial up anyway, I used to but it really sucked for TRIBES. So the damage is only to the PVPers, who I would think would be using broadband.

Sir, were not saying to make it hard for the PVE. Theres been alot of complaining about how small fast fighters can toast your YT with strafing runs. How can they strafe you so easily when your YT is in an asteroid field? This gives you the edge you need against hotrod fighters with your big slug/boats with heavier shields, the asteroids do nil damage to none, because the damage would also be relevant to your velocity. I'm just advocating to give YT's a chance is all.

I'm not saying little asteroids should do MAJOR damage, but just some, at least a tier 2's blaster worth, but it depends on the angle they hit you. It also forces you to go into 1rst person which is kinda cool.

If your PVPing in space with adial-up or even PVEing ateroid damage wouldnt even matter cause something else is goin to kill you real quick anyway.

For you totell us to go play an offline game is like me running in to troll all of these-"I'M A BIGFAT CAREBEAR! I H8 KESS3L!I GOT GRIEFED WAAAAH!!!" posts...

You CAN use them as cover. The larger asteroids will absorb balster fire. In fact, I've been in dogfights where the NPC fighters will fly around the back of an asteroid and stop their engines to "hide" from me. Neat little trick from the AI (lol doesn't really work) but I think in PvP the asteroid field would be agreat place to avoid some blaster fire. And yes, I think the bigger asteroids should cause damage when you collide with them.

Janzi_Dax, I was doing the exact same thing yesterday, and had a blast!

I also tried landing on one of the larger asteroids. How cool would it be to be able to fly into one like in empire strikes back...

Collideadble asteroids would be soo cool. Even if we bounced agressively off them, without too much damge, that would fine.

And how does that make me "1337"? Do you have any sort of explanation?

OIC. At least I didnt go go troll that in someones thread they made like Sir came in and trolled us telling us to go play offline.

I'm not 1337 ppl blow my ass up everyday across all sorts of games.I just don't have as big an ego about dying in a video game as some do.
