Thread: Why is Space so Small?

I was reading over the dev Tracker and came across a response to why there are not star destoyers in space arould planets where they are visible from the ground.

The response : The biggest problem with placing them in the other space zones are their immense size, there's just not room for them right now. That and the fact that it would pulverize any Rebel pilots starting their adventure in Naboo.

This is actual post if you want to read it too.

Not room for them right now...meaning that space will get bigger? Space is a pretty small place atm, with sandbox sized zones around each planet that can be flown across in a few minutes. So why is space so small? We should have huge areas around entire planets that can hold entire fleet's of star destoyers, and at least 1 death star... If getting one star destroyer into a space area is such a big problem how will you get a deathstar in?

Only one deathstar? please.......we're gonna need room for at least 3...per zone...

Well they can fit in Star Destroyers they are only 1600 meters long, that would be like 1 ship per system. Or they should be in systems such as Dathomir and Naboo where there is a high imperial presence etc...

But yeah it would turn green pilots to pulp!

I dont understand why they cant just shrink all the models in space, keeping the zone sizes the same. A lot of games did this, even some half-life mods to get more space out of the map size limitations.

What do you expect? Something is promised/implemented that has further inherent content down the road,...and it's then magically NOT there when the time comes,...and due to reasons that are obvious beforehand, but ignored/put off anyways. And its more than possible to make the zones large enough to actually fly around a planet...freelancer had zones that were MUCH bigger than that, with no load times. And for some planets/zones, it SOULD be hard for rebel/imperial pilots to enter the system....There should be factionally dangerous areas, where it's practically suicide for even amaster pilot to enter, without a squadron with him. In star wars, no rebel pilot in his right MIND would risk jumping into a zone where theres known imperial activity like multiple star destroyers...They would find a way around it, or jump into the shadow of the planet, outside of sensor range. We need factional bases/environments in space because it's a major part of the universe. For planets that are supposedly under Imperial control,..it's awfully easy for a rebel pilot to jump in-system, find a nice place to sit, within range of imperial space stations, and eat fried chicken ALL THEY WANT. There should be fighter patrols, capital ships, etc....but there isn't, and likely won't be,

From what I have seen, the same dimensions for the ground game has been used for space. The only difference being we can move up and down now. It still looks like 16km across and 16km up / down. It is possible to expand the physical dimensions of the zone forever, limited only by the capability of the server to handle it. I expect the areas to expand as more is added to them. Especially if player stations and space facilities are added. I seriously doubt that the zones will stay this way forever because people will get bored quickly if there is nothing to do but fight NPCs and each other in a cube.

You mean like they got bored with the ground game?

Fact is the ground regions are small too, smaller than most other massive multiplayer online games I've played and they haven't gotten any bigger. Space sectors would need to be ten times the size they are now and the speed of the spaceships should be much faster as well. Ever done an escort mission for a freighter? I could literally get out and push it's so slow.

Freighters should be slow, though

I agree freighters should be slow, but they are barely going faster than you would if you were walking in space. That's just silly. I did an escort mission next to a station. I flew with the freighter for almost an hour, yet the station was there in the background the whole time. We barely travelled 3km.

I don't like to bring in other games to this one since most can't compare to each other, but if you've played X-wing V TIE Fighter or A-wing Alliance then you would notice the ships do indeed go much faster. The speed system is based on a 200+ Speed scale, however, so if they wanted to use ratios or something to compare they could. But things DO go reallly slowly

Yes, and bigger to have more room, for better astroid fields, Have you ever played the First level of The first Starwars Starfighter? the astroid field isnt the best of graphics, but it gives it an actual feal of going into a massive astroid field, the ones on the game... dont really give that Epic starwars feal... oh yeah, and to be able to see the debree of Dead Ties and little rocks should be expanded, so you can see them from a larger distance, istead of only seeing a few rocks move passed you within 10 m's...
