Can somebody please give me a detailed explanation (or direct me to a site where they are explained) of what the various JTL weapon statistics mean? I am particularly conused about the "vs. Shields" and "vs. Armor" stats and how those relate to "Damage." These statistics are explained in the Prima guidebook, but the description only served to confuse me more. Thanks!

I presume it's a modifier. Take the damage and multiply it by the "vs" number of what you're hitting. So a laser that does 1000 damage, with a vs shields of .7 and a vs armor of .2 would damage shields for 700 and armor for 200.
In my ship, I've got an ion and a disruptor, which I switch between. Best of both worlds.

OK, Bobulus, that sort of makes sense to me if you're correct. The part I am still unclear about is what happens to the remaining 100 (= 1000 minus 700 minus 200) in your example. Does it pass through both the shield and armor and damage components, or is it unused/lost? I guess I'm trying to figure out if the "vs. Shields" and "vs. Armor" stats are better to be high, or low.
I have one weapon in particular (a ManalMotors Enhanced "Mangler" Cannon) that is 0.610 vs Shields, and 0.650 vs. Armor Let's assume that it has a Damage stat on 1000, to be comparable with your example. Using your formula, that would mean it would damage shields for 610 and armor for 650. It obviously can't do that in one shot, because those add up to 1260, which is more than the maximum damage per shot. Perhaps the shield modifier doesn't kick in until the shileds are completely down?

i assumed the first was for shields, once the shields are down the second number kicks in.
thus a different example, .700 to shields, .3 to armor, you'd have a great gun vs shields, doing 700 a shot with a 1000dmg gun. but once those shields were out, you'd only be doing 300dmg to the armor.

Thanks Meeuki, your idea pretty much went along with what I was guessing might be how it works. I'm still trying to figure out though where the remaining damage goes. So with your latest example, let's say the target's shieldsjust wentdown and his armor is still at full strength. If you then fire 1000dmg gun at him, 300 of it hits his armor. What happens to the remaining 700? Does it do nothing, or does it pass through the shields and hit his ship's components? It seems to me that sometimes when I am shooting an NPC enemy, that sometimes his components start taking damage before the shields are completely down, but I could be wrong about that. I'll have to pay closer attention in my next battle.

Say you have an ion cannon with 500-1000 damage, shield of .8 and armor of .3
The ion cannon will do 400-800 points of damage to shields.
When the shields are down, it will do 150-300 points of damage to armor and armor on components.
When there is no armor left on components, the ion cannon will do 500-1000 points of damage onsurviving components and thechassis.
There is no such thing as "leftover damage".
And NPC ships have shield arcs just like player ships do, afaik, so 50% shields means that one shield arc is depleted and you're now hitting components/hull on the npc ship.

Thank you, Starcloud and Atytula, you very nicely cleared up my remaining point of confusion (very high damage vs. confusion)--very nicely explained!

Don't think of it as extra damage. When the target has sheilds, you do damage based on the shield modifier. When the shields are down, it does damage based on the armor modifier. So using the example, 1000 dmg, 0.7 vs sheilds and 0.3 vs armor. You attack your target doing 1000 dmg. The shieilds absorbs 300 damage and lose 700 hit points. Then you finish the sheilds and start on the armor. The armor gets hit for 1000 dmg. The armor absorbs 700 damage and loses 300 hit points.
