Is this the one that begins with the escort of the technicians in Endor space? If so i almost finished this solo last night and only got killed trying to fight my way to the last mission waypoint to transmit the data. It's a hard mission but possible solo, if hard, or in a group with the right tactics.
What i was doing was using /eweapons to overcharge my weapons, in my TIE/In,to kill the spawning rebels as quickly as possible to give me sufficient time to recover between waves. Also using proton missiles to take the targets down as quickly as possible. The harder ships i found were the A-wings as these are very fast and quick turning ships but using /eweapons on them meant a few direct shots to kill them. The x-wings, t-95sand b-wings etc were ok using normal powered weapons but the boosted /eweapons make a big difference in taking out the a-wings.
If there are 2 of you doing the mission take it in turns to use the /eweapons boost, if you are both onpilot skills 2-2-2-2 you can both use it,as it takes a few minutes once it runs out for you to be able to use it again. So taking it in turns will help out if you are able to. As i tried this mission out the night before and failed it twice before looking at my skills and seeing /eweapons which i am now using.
It is a hard set of missions as i was there fortwohours doing it before i finally died after being overwhelmed finally by the npcs on what i think was the last section on my way to transmit the data. If you are on the Chimaera server i would be happy to lend a hand in doing this mission or if not i hope the above might help you complete the mission with your friend.

I spent a good few times doing this. What I found was that you need a good wingman. In my poor TIE/IN with level 3 gear I couldn't take the damage I was receiving.
Also, I found that disabling the ships rather than destroying them made them spawn faster.
But yeah, I would recommend getting into a group and doing this. I know my guild on Valcyn has about 4 pilots at the same stage, so we all take turns helping eachother out. Its also alot more fun and fast in a group, and good XP for thos doing the tier 4 grind too.
I'm now on the last of my tier 3 missions, so we'll see what happens tomorrow!

Another small tip is to not destroy the ships you're fighting. Target their reactors or engines and disable them to take them out of the equation. The longer you take trying to destroy a ship, the more time the others have to manuever behind you.
Finishing the mission is more important than the loot or xp the ships give, that's what duty missions are for.

I've come close to finishing this one too. Solo and with a group. Yes, disabling ships is the best thing to do.
I can get through it with only taking damage to my shields. Problem I've been having is Teir 4 spawns enganing me towards teh end. Mobs that just happen to pop close to you and have nothing to do with the mission. It's pretty agrivating.
If they didn't take me out last time, I would have completed the mission.

It's whatever way suits you best to do the mission but i found i could destroy them quicker than disabling them especially using /eweapons.

A few friends and myself managed to complete this mission last night. While it is hard dont give up on it. Just as a note you dont have to go up with Imperial wingman, I completed the mission with two neutral PA memebers and we generally kicked a$$. The problem with the tier 4's is to concentrate on them as quickly as possible and knock out the engine or reactor. Also as a side note I would suggest that you try and keep up with the ships you need to escort. When trying to solo this mission I had several re-trys because I was outside of the ships range. Even after destroying all the attacking ships and boosting to the target I was told that the mission failed because I was too far away.
So to sum up. Keep close, take out tier 4's fast (not that many of them really) and while I think of it, try knocking out the Y-Wings early as well, they tend to attack you more often than the W-Wing or Z-95.
Good luck with it

Another tip - don't get into a perpetual head-on dogfight with the T4s. When they come at you head on, never wait for them to hit/pass you before beginning your turn-around.
If you begin your turn earlier, BEFORE they pass you, they'll enter an easy-to-follow gradual turn. It's like potting a clay pigeon after that, and so far it's worked for me with up to even T5 targets. If you turn AFTER they pass you, they'll keep turning head-on into you FOREVER.
Additionally, most engines have a better turn ratio (at least mine does) when you add an angle to the turn. If you just slide along the x-axis, I've found you turn much slower than you would if you put a 30-degree rise/fall to the turn.

On the subject of weapons, are you using Ion Cannons?
Everything has shields which recharge. If you are targetting reactor or engine the shields form the largest hitpoints protection. Blasters and Disruptors just arent efficient.

I find blasters efficient for most everything. I only equip an ion cannon on my Advanced when I need to go up against a heavily shielded enemy or one with quite a bit of turret coverage. I bind my blaster to Mouse1 and ion to Mouse 2 with my ordinance group on Mouse3 (I keep a bomber for supporting). Mouse4 is "target enemy under recticle).

Just abandon the ships you need to escort after the first bit, they'll be fine on their own.
Not saying this mission is any good, like most of these "missions" it utterly and completely sh1t and purely designed to waste as many people's time as possible.

All the tier 3 and 4 missions are TOO hard. The last imperial mission on tier 3 against the gunboat is impossible. Tried 5 times last night with a good 6 person group, the gunboat either destroyed the entire group or just hypers away.
JTL is a great expansion until you get to the missions. Whoever designed the missions, did not play test them. The mission design is horrible and someone at SOE needs to be beat with a wet noodle because of it.
1. Long missions that cannot be restarted.
2. Too powerful main ships that don't remain around long enough to kill.
3. No group credit, meaning if multiple people in your group need the mission, you must run it multiple times.
Those 3 bullets are major impediments to enjoyable gameplay and should be addressed by the devs.
