just wondering if in a future publish will we get flyable capitol ships, such as star destroyers, nebula-b frigates, mon cal cruisers, or corvettes? i have heard many things from many people but have not heard any official word on the subject. just wondering if someone could give a response that is a little more definitive and official.

the star destroyer in deep space is what 2km long? can you imagine piloting a 2km long ship?
let's say it's a multiplayer craft and your buddy has to repair something in the engine room. do you loan him your speeder to get there?
imagine 1 or 2 of those popping into hyperspace near you. 10 dollars say the cluster crashes instantly.
i'd like to see boardable/pilotable corvettes able to be contested though. i think that would be pretty fun. go up, disable a vett, jump in, fly it around, some PC imps attack and board you and you have to fight them off from the inside. neat.

well you don't have to make them exactly to scale, the space stations aren't to scale in fact almost nothing in space is to scale. have you ever stopped your ship right at a station and zoomed out? i single seat fighter shouldn't be that big compared to a space station that should hold several ships and many, many people.
as for traveling within the ship, you don't have to have access to every part of the ship, really just the bridge and some other key parts that could be gotten through via elevators and other "automated" systems that would make it seem like you traveled far but didn't. also, they could make it so that a full group of 20 would be needed to crew a capitol ship...

i guess i never really thought about that, space stations aren't really to scale. or at least frigates aren't.
but the corvette seems to be fairly close to scale... and the one star destroyer is close to scale as well, being 2km long. still, would you want to pilot a less than scale star destroyer? how big would one be? 1k? 500m? at what point does a tiny star destroyer become a bit rediculous?
i'm thinking even a 500m ship would be a bit too much for the servers to handle running amok.

One other thing to consider is thata star destroyer is pretty much a player city in space. You should be able to dock with it, especially since they're supposed to contain squadrons of tie fighters, which poses this problem: what happens to the ship when the owner logs? Off the top of my head, and using the player city as a basis, the ship is forever in the game. I would imagine that only certain people have permission to pilot the ship, but anyone(I would imagine only imperial faction members) could come aboard and use or pay to use the facilities. In case of attack, I suppose the ship would have automated defenses, but anyone on the ship could man a weapons turret. This is, of course, reaching, but just some ideas I was thinking about in how they might handle capital ships.

I have had an opinion about capital ships...
YES, they should exist
YES, they should be craftable
But...
- They are limited by the number that can be "active" at any given time
- They are "faction owned vehicles" and not individual vehicles
- They are operated by players who dock with the ship and assume command of various positions including (but not limited to)
--- Bridge Pilot
--- Bridge Communications (communicates with people on the ship, broadcasts messages, etc)
--- Maintenance Staff (Various component/conduits) - people "babysit" the various stations incase of the need of repairs.
--- Hangar Communications (allows players permission to dock/land)
--- Hangar Repairs/Reloads/Refits
--- Targeting Manager (selects and prioritizes or "paints" preferred targets)
--- Gunners
--- Security (people running around on the vehicle for ground-based PVP up in space defending the ship)
You would then have players attacking the vehicle, boarding parties trying to land a ship oncertain areas to dock/infiltrate, perhaps trick the Hangar communications manager into letting them land, etc... all sorts of players attacking the components and ship, players on board working to fix the broken pieces, etc - feasibly 100-200 players on a single vehicle operating it at maximum efficiency, etc.
I really hope that someday that becomes a reality of this game.. and yes, I want the 2KM version of the ships... and yes, I want 2KM long "cities" that you walk around and navigate through tunnels, passages, chambers, etc.. it would only make for one massive and monstrous battle that could just be an absolute world of fun.

You're right an absurdly small capitol ship would just be stupid if we go up against one it should seem imposing, if it were too small it would be silly. On the other hand there are several versions of the star destroyer depicted in the movies and EU. there is the original imperial star destroyer (ImpStar), the imperial star destroyer II (ImpStarII), the super star destroyer, and the interdictor class destroyers. each of them is rather different in size and weapons load with the original imperial star destroyer being the smallest of the purely combat destroyers.I have yet to see a destroyer in game but i would like to know what class destroy it is supposed to be.

i just looked it up on theforce.net, according to them the victory class star destroyer is 900m long, the one that is in the game then is probably a ImpStar or ImpStarII both of wich are 1600m long. so if they used these as dimensions a 900m long star desroyer wouldn't be unrealistic and "might" be doable.

that's still a pretty long ship to be pilotable. maybe purchasable and inhabiltable (to an extent) like a faction base?

Do we really need player pilotable capital ships? The MP ships act as mini-capital ships that requires a crew of 5-8 to be effective and all 5-8 passengers has a vital rolein combat (1 pilot, 1 operations officer, 2 gunners, 3 egnineers, 1 medical officer).
