Flying missions around Lok, I found my frame rate becoming unplayable, it dropped to 6-8 whilst dogfighting... And the fix?
CTRL+SHIFT+F2 to turn off the cockpit!
My framerate instantly jumped to 22-30! I became an ace pilot again!
I suspect the cockpit is merely a 2d stencil, rather than 3d mesh; which my graphics card doesn't handle too well, and in flipps out of whizzo speed 3d mode back into 2d mode every frame....
<edit> (the cockpit IS 3d, Thanks Gera! So what do you reckon makes my system 3x as fast? Some coding bug?
My system has :- ageforce 5600FX 256mb, in a P4 2.5 GHZ with 768Mb ram, windows xp pro sp1, all the latest drivers. I'd be interested to hear your experiences before starting the whole /bug process...

Cocpit is not 2D, you can understand by pressing Numeric Keypad 0 and turning your mouse

I always wondered how to turn the cockpit off. Thanks!
I'm guessing the increase in speed is the lack of textures your card has to deal with. The cockpit is full of bells and whistles that could cause your card a little grief. Also if you shutoff the cockpit it might just cease to render all the polygons involved, which could be a few.
Still that doesn't seem like enough. Are you really having that much trouble running the game with a 256MB card? My ATI 9800 Pro seems to work fine and my old GeForce 4 worked great on low settings. I think you need to figure out what's wrong with your computer.

You can disable the cockpit in Options, too.. however, I had to do that for every new ship I used.

Maybe the bug is related to the same issue I see, when I resize a window on I get way less frame rate.. I dunno what they did but it never did that before and I am not alone, many of my voice chat buddies noticed it... maybe it was the new DirectX or poor code... but when I resize or move a window this never happened in the past...

My system seems fine in every other respect, well I played through Doom3 with no real performance issues! I am tending to think its a non obvious bug. In the ground game my FPS drops to about a third of what it usually is if I open my inventory... I know all those spinny icons will use some CPU power, but 2x what the whole game needs? C'mon, something must be up... Either I have any incredibly unlikely combination of hardware/software that causes these bugs, in this piece of software alone, or the code is slightly cracked in the game....

Have you updated video card drivers recently? Could be an outdated driver, or a bugged new driver.
