I had this very same problem. I kept shooting and shooting but none of them took any damage. I'm a privateer by the way. I was trying to kill them in my starter ship called a Scyk. So I went out and bought a player made scyk and loaded it out with components and tried again. This time they all took damage and died very quickly. I have only been playing for 2 days now so I'm not sure that this solution will work for everyone but for me it was definately the starter ship that was bugged.
I reccomend you go out and buy a playermade starter ship, fill it with components and give it a shot. It might just work.

This is Boardtroll btw.. boardtroll is my alt account >:-)
anyway, guys ... those of you who keep posting suggestions as to how to hit your targets, youre obviously not reading, or maybe are unable to.
Ive played elite, elite 2, sentinel (amiga), privateer, privateer 2, wingcommander series, frontier, frontier 2, xwing/tie fighter series, beyond the frontier, earth and beyond, homeworld blah. blah.and a dozen more i cant even remember incl. the very first starwars 3d wireframearcade game ever made.. to top that up ive been a games developer for 14 years of my life.... --=> do not lecutre me on how to freakin use a joystick, ok? <=- LOL... you crack me up.
There is a bug here, its not hitting most of you and thats good.. however, it does not change the fact that theres a few unlucky people out there, incl. my friend, who are unable to damage targets even in their noob starter ship.
We tried compiling a new ship for him, got him setup with a SW lvl 1 ship and had all the required components ect. ect. then we went to do our test... as i said earlier -i disabled the ship- .. if you dont know what that means, it means the ship -is not moving- .. ie. lag is out of the picture, not having enough dexterity to hit a moving target is out of the picture.. only thing he has to do is stand still and fire at a NON MOVING TARGET... and so we did and lo and behold, no damage delt... he emptied his blaster energy 2-3 times.... after that, i killed the target in one shot, just to be sure...
[edit]
just to point out, the targets was his targets.. we where grouped, so i could fire at them.. it was tier 1 ships from the very first mission you get as a privateer (smuggler alliance on tat, to be specific).. i was in my tie fighter, he was in his scyk ship we just built.
did it seep in now?
thank you :-)

Same for me, shields flash and nothing is damaged.
I even try to hit ships my buddies disable for me and nada. even when they are dead in the water, or dark matter or whatever I do NO damage to them.
This is total doo doo.

I also have the same problem. But it gets better I can see they're shields flash when I fire at them but they're shields still read 100%. Plz SOE fix this.

As of this morning I just started experiencing the same thing. Before today I could shoot tier 2's down in just a few shots. Today I'm lucky to get them in 5-10 minutes each. Shields flash but no damage taken unless the target indicator lines up with the ship exactly and I'm right behind him. If I get that then I do the same damage as before. Now I only seem to damage them if I shoot slightly ahead of or after the target indicator and I only take out about 1-2% of their shields that way so it takes me about 5-10 minutes to kill them. This is just awfull. After spending an hour and a half on a duty mission I gave up. Servers were coming down anyway. This needs to be FIXED!!!

I get this problem almost all teh time in varying degrees
at first I hit the the ships aiming for the green leading target then after a short time I will have to lead even further then sometimes I can't hit the ships at all however after a short time my ship hicups I loose speed and start accelerating again for a couple of seconds the green crosshair is the thing to aim for then the whole thing repeats.
I saw another thread on here that could be reponsible for at least some of this (I will give it a go tonight)
but the people on here are right It's the main server thinking your ship is one place compared to what your homecomputer thinks you are located luckily my home computer seems to get updated every minute or so as to my location but it's really annoying.
And if it weren't for that bug I would be master by now

Well, I still don't think this is a bug. I think it's intended. You can't damage friendly ships or ships that are already damaged by someone else. Your experiment proved that. the one doing no damage should have had a warning beeping that told him he was firing on an invulnerable target to him.

Wokka.. i dont know what youre deal is... obviously youre not paying much attention..
youre telling me that youre not allowed to hit ships in a group? well youre wrong, this is how most people play the game atm, since theres an element of powerleveling going on there.
Try grouping, im sure youll find that you can indeed shoot at your mates targets.

An update on my experience with this:
This morning, I found that I was able to hit anything I wanted with my Y-wing, missions were fully playable, etc. Perhaps just rebooting, being online at a better time, I'm not sure.
So my message to all you folks who are still having this problem: It's all in your head... it works for me... line up the crosshairs... don't shoot other people's ships... blabla bla ;D

Just to throw even more wood on the fire, the other night my poor bug-afflicted buddy happened tobe logged on trying, once again, to do something--anything--in JTL. Basicallyhe had already spent 3 hours of sufferring not being able to kill anything. So whatever is going onwas still affecting him.
I wanted desperately to testsome things and help him out so he could start getting some value of of his purchase...So I raced to Naboo whereI immediately used /findfriend to pinpoint him.
I flew tothis spot, used/findfriend afew moretimes and got to within a few hundredmeters (or whatever).Started jabbing my "Target Next Player" key and got NOTHING with his name in it. Atthe least I should have seen his Player name (he had not named his ship).
/findfrienda few more times, begged him to hold still (at thispoint he was almost completely emotionally spent...both on JTL and SWG in general. I don't think he heard or listened to me). Anyway, no matter how close I--apparently--got to him I simply could not target or SEE his ship.
Another friend ofours hypered in shortly after to also lend a hand. I pickedhim up with my "Find Next Player" key immediately, while he was still 4500m away. SoI knew the key was working. Did another /findfriend and my invisible buddy was waypointed well within 1000 meters. Flew there...find next....NOTHING.
Anyway, knowing firsthand the 'groupmate turns invisible'bug from the ground game I went to land and take off... But my poor bud said "Enough, i'm outta here, bye" before I could assist any further. I couldn't justly blame him either.
Now I'm not shouting to the moon about a definate bug. There was plenty of room for operator error on my part since events moved rather quickly, and unfortunately my friend was in no emotional state to stop and help me out.... But I'm convinced that, at least at the time, there may have been something badly and fundamentally borked with his connection/account/JTL installation. That incident, combined with his week-long nightmare of ineffectiveness at killing even a single Tier 1 ship, just has to point to a software flaw somewhere in the loop.
I'm hoping against hope that he can bring himself to log on again. Still want to run a few tests (disable ship, radar visibility, shooting disabled ship from the top/bottom/rear/side, waypoint generation, can he see ME?, etc etc).
and on and on....

Hmm yeah thats pretty interesting tho, i was able to see my friend well enough.. perhaps another test is in order later tonight.. my guildmate is still suffering from the problem , however he was able to deal a bit of damage last night he said, until a certain point and it all reverted back to him not being able to do anything... he went back to the spacestation and asked for repairs to see if that was the problem this time, but he didnt get a repair option.. i assume that means no systems where damaged...
Well im definatly crying to the moon that there is a bug coz.. well.. there is :-p .. that it may be related to an issue with the computer being used is obviously not out of the question.. one way to test that would be for me to log into his account and try shooting stuff with his account and his ship.. but i think thats against the "rules"... not sure tho.
