You all really underestimate the Y-Wing. The speed factor only makes a difference when trying to evade. No one dogfights at full throttle, your turns are much wider at higher velocities. With the amount of beating it can take, and the fact a TIE Fighter wont last one volley of its blasts, and its missile payload. It's quite the force to be reckoned with in the right hands. (In XWA I topple TIE Defenders on Super Ace AI with a Y-Wing using only the lasers -- I wont be flying one in JTL but don't knock the Y)

The Y-Wing is a pretty nasty bugga in the right hands. As a TIE Fighter vet from previous SW space sims, I know that they are a pretty nasty force to be up against. It is slow, but that thing can take a barage of laser fire before it is disabled or destroyed. In the hands of a player who is much smarter than computer AI, they can be quite a tough cookie to take on.
Don't underestimate the Y-Wing Imperials.

i too love the ywing however my imperial nature annoys me b/c i wont have access to it.. b/c even though the ship is used wide spread over multiple factions and even there data on it says taht The Imperials will never see that nor will we likely see the Lambda Class Shuttle

I'm a big fan of Imperial ships, but all of my characters are Rebel. So just do what I did, create a character on another server to fly Imperial ships.... or Rebel in your case.

Hello:
This reminds me the Ju88 (Junkers - 88) from WWII, a multiporpouse aircraft. It went from Heavy fighter role to Medium range bomber

Exactly. If you're looking to win dogfights find another ship but as part of a well organized fighting team, the Y-Wing is nothing to scoff at. It packs a tremendous punch. With the right armament and escorts to deal with enemy fighters, a Y-Wing can take out an ISD. Hopefully we'll be allowed multiple ships, and if so, I plan on having a Y-Wing specifically for strike missions against ISDs and space stations.

it goes good fire power, decent durability but poor manuverability and low top speed. It is a support craft but cannot generally excel at ship to ship combat. If it is grouped with escorts the Y-wing is dangerous.

If you think the Y wing will be too slow, then just upgrade the engines im sure that will work or have people forgot about that aspect of the game ?

I hate the y-wing what a piece of junk! But watch out when they attack our fleet craft! one little fighter canhurt our mighty star destroyer if left alone out of turbolaser range.
