Thread: The Kessel Run
LOL, sorry didn't mean to hijack your thread.
Your idea, is just that an idea. I really dought we'll see any smuggler content untill the space expansion.
But all in all its a good idea.
I like the part where the smuggler has to 'slice' the terminal to get the mission. Maybe that's how all smuggler missions can be aquired. You go to the artisan terminal and 'slice' it and you get a third tab to select missions from. The first two tabs are deliver and crafting obviously and the third would be a tab for NPC smuggling missions.
I've mentioned something about this before, and glad to see at least one person is on my wavelength! Previously i had said it in relation to the spice experimentation arguments, and how experimentation would possibly remove this potential great piece of gaming from our profession.
Smugglers should NOT be able to make Glitterstim period! It is a rare mined substance that is refined. It is not mass produced. Anything that would make us able to mass produce glitterstim would ruin the feel. I had something in mind similar to your idea. Buy the goods from a trade post on Kessel, make the run, sell to the public at a huge mark up. The Kessel run would have to be sufficiently difficult to mean that people can't do it 3-4 times a day.
LOL, I have read soooo many of the books they are all combining into one. I stand corrected.
/salute
I have heard rumors that Nar Shudda will be one of the new planets added with the Space expansion. this planet as you know is the "Smugglers Moon", Hutt territory. This would be an ideal location for our breed to hang-out.

Back on subject...I think it would be wishful thinking to have Kessel as a planet in the Space Expansion because its inhospitable to sentient beings. Granted you can land there and go inside buildings but if they stick to continuity you won't be able to walk around or place structures. Therefore the entire planet wont be coded, it would be more like a space station of sorts.
However, I don't think the DEVs would be keen on the idea of a smuggler only planet, because there really isn't anything else there and you won't be able to walk around and explore without spacesuits or the proper vehicles. But it would be awsome. I can see my badge now: ...has dared the infamous Kessel Run and survived.
Great idea Vagrant and would stick to the story in the books/movie. You dock at the space station and the glitterstim is loaded so you can plan your return trip. I had envisioned that the Kessel Run would be a grueling test of flying and navigation skill that would take anywhere from 15 min to 1 hour depending on your risk level.
The Glitterstim itself should be like a doctor/musician buff. It hits all 9 stats and lasts a couple of hours. Most doctors are buffing 6 stats for 5k a buff. Glitterstim would stack with any other buffs just like any spice. I'm thinking it would sell for around 5k a hit. You would probably have to break up a crate of 25 into smaller crate quantities, because the high decay rate wouldn't allow you to use all 25 hits before it decayed and disappeared.
I also like the idea of a badge for a successful run. Maybe a badge for making the run under a certain time to? Han Solo always bragged that the Falcon made one of the fastests runs to Kessel.
heheh, yeah, "I made the kessel run in under 12 parsecs".
i'd love to see a badge for this, give people something to brag about when the ships come out. though i would hate to lose a really expensive ship. oh well, great idea man!
If I remember correctly, the "made the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs" thing was about flying that close to the Maw to evade Imperial interdiction, like, the space surrounding Kessel is heavily monitored and patrolled, so any routes aside from those near the Maw would subject you to Imperial monitoring. The closer you get to the Maw, the shorter your trip is and the less likely the Imperials will stop you. So Han was bragging that his ship was fast enough that it could escape from the Maw's gravitational pull at that close a distance.
I'd like to see Kessel turn up as a planet, personally, because if I remember there are some pretty good nasties in the Spice Mines.
The idea of them being at the same level as doctor buffs I like. And make it a Master Craftable as well.
I think this can be implemented prior to a space expansion, at least to a lesser extent.
When a mission terminal is sliced you are given a few options, you need to hire a pilot and rent a ship. The more expensive the pilot, the greater the chance of success. The ship will also have a few options, speed (to outrun patrols), manueverablity (for avoiding debris), and size (for amount of cargo space), the better the ship used, the more likely you will get positve results. You get what you paid for, drop 100k credits, increase your success to 90%, spend 10k credits, only have 15% chance of success.
Since you trust nobody, you go along for the ride.
Accepting a Kessel Run mission will require a lot of credits up front as the initial investment. I imagine you'll need to travel to the starport where your pilot/ship can be found. Once there you depart, get the load screen and maybe some interesting video display, then get the results.
Success means you have returned (to the starport of your chosing) alive and well. In a few hours (need to grease some palms and get the freight through customs), you will be able to pick up your cargo from a pre-determined location.
Failure means you lose your up front investment and find yourself at a random cloning center in the galaxy.
Such risk will certainly put a premium on the price of the spice, but since you've taken the risk, the rewards should be yours.
After the release of the space expansion, you are the pilot and you can either rent, or buy and modify your own vessel.
Han Solo Trilogy was the probably the Best Starwars books I have ever read and should be one the main sources for ideas on the Smuggler proffesion.
That trilogy along with attention the proffesion has been promised forever now are what made me want to become a smuggler.
Hell, that Book is what gives Bria it's name. Han's first ship named after his first girl.

I don't know if I like the idea of a decay affect on the spice.
I wanted to make the spice very valuable and rare. Something that people would seek out, like krayt pearls or crystals. By having it disappear within a week or two, it also adds to the risk of the smuggler and user alike. I want this mystical glitterstim that makes me practically invincible when I stack it with food and doctor's buffs. As a user I must search out and find a source, thenuse it while it is before it spoils and disappears from my inventory.
Glitterstim itself from all of the books I've read is a very difficult spice to mine and refine. It is dangerous to mine at Kessel because of the crystal spiders that inhabit the mines. It must be mined and refined in total darkness, because light activates it. I think the decay makes consistent the sensitivity and care that must be taken to move and sell this product.
The market for glitterstim will benefit from this decay to and the smuggler has other risks. Buy too much on that last run? You may have to drop your price and closeout on your stock. This could be disastrous to your profit and hurt your business as a whole. I want the Kessel Run to make or break smugglers, as it was portrayed in all of the books. Are you up to it? You'll have to be a crack pilot, a savvy businessman, and a risk taker to reap the benefits of the Kessel Run.
I cannot agree more WaerbGloofin. I really hope that we will come into our own once the space expansion comes out. Though I feel we need more care p[laced into our order for land based travel as well.
Your post is a mirror of exactly what I wish to see for the Space Expansion.
