Thread: Jousting or Dog Fighting?

75% of npcs I killed today do only but this maneuver.

We're both flying at each other and shooting, he gets out of my range, I start turning by the time I see him he's already heading straight towards me and doing another "joust". /rinse /repeat

getting kind of old. why cant we see other different maneuvers instead of this medieval joust?

Strangely enough, it was only Z-95s, A-Wings, and B-Wings performing this stupid ploy.

Oh and for the love of god somebody fix the TIE Interceptors lasers, I am constantly shooting "through" my enemies and not damaging them at all.

While we're on the subject, fix the a-wings ability to become invulnerable for a small amount of time then all of a sudden start taking damage, then go invulnerable again.

I could have sworn I reported these bugs in Beta.

I have noticed tie fighters jousting me quite abit as well. Especially tie advanced. Not the aggressor though that just chews me up with its turret.

Kinda funny at first but yeah more variety in their tactics would be cool.

while it is annoying, i find that that's the only effective maneuver in making me take longer to kill it... hell if they werent jousting i'd kill it much faster...

u know wut's worse tho? i had a nova just joust me... (yeah i'm imp) now that was scary... stupid AI turret... hax

Its easy to stop them jousting, when they are coming straight for you start turning, by the time they pass you you are allmost directly behind them and they cant turn fast enough to joust so they try and run.

The jousting is usally a result of an error in meneuvering.

The obvious goal is to get behind the enemy then blast him to hell. But when that fails, you either end up with the enemy behind you blasting youor you both overshoot the target and end up jousting again in order to re-attempt the meneuver.

I can't see why any one would intentionally "joust" their opponent because it is not the optimal and safest way to kill your target.

It's not really an error.

... it has to do with a stupid flight AI and those ships having tight turning rates.

When you pass them the AI is trying to keep the nose of the ship on you, that means a 180. Unlike most other ships however these have such a high turning rate that they are facing you again before they even overcome thier own inertia, so the effect is a 180 degree reversal coming right back at you.

Aproblem of physics allowing a very manuverable ship to do some stuff that the AI is too stupid to correct for.

Oh, sorry, I thought this was in reference to PvP.

I use the same tactics, btw, in PvE to avoid the joust. 90% of the time, I can take a joust and end up on the ship's tail. It's only when I mess up that I need to repeat jousting in order to get it to stop.

They need to hotfix the AI.

Just last night, on a tier 3 mission, we became so desperate, I brought my Yacht with me out to the target, I'd position it so I would be a 'wall.' Now, we were fighting A-Wings, that definitely sucks when they do their jousting maneuver, so my friends had tohide behind my yacht, face toward his direction and catch up with the A-Wing without being damaged, it's almost impossible to catch that thing now that the turning rate at 0 speed is extremely slow. If they kept a fast turning rate at 0 speed, this problem wouldn't be too bad of a problem.

You have to start turning before they even turn around and risk getting banged up. Hopefully, they figure a way to get around the AI error, otherwise you just have to run like hell for it to reset the AI and come back.

flight in general is bad in pve and pve, where ironically enough, human players use the same method, not because they are bad in flight, im sure many are flight sim vets. its just that the flight model sucks, where any sort of manuever is pointless when u can just spin in cricles or head staright at the enemy , which are the only viable tactics atm

Yea, TIE Interceptors are the worst IMO. I kinda wish we took damage from collision, maybe the AI wouldn't ram you so much. AI is really horrible. (or maybe it's my turn radius in a YWing...)

a wings have the speed and manuoverability, but you have a brain, limit its manouverability, target its engines, thenit will be a sitting duck, and As previously mentioned, adjust your turn to anticipate the joust, and voila you are on its tail... If you have ever played x-wing v tie, or alliance, this is stanard procedure.

So we created a system that would allow players to switch professions during the game, and there would be a lot of gameplay around making that change. If you want to go from architect to scout we've created a system to make that happen."

That's not really my point. The point is they do it continuously and it gets kind of annoying 800k xp later.

jousting is a bad way to fly...too much of a risk for collisions (not really a problem yet) and takes to long...best method I found was to joust the first time I move to engage then cut back to half throttle as he moves in and start turning slowly, faster when he flys by. Next about 75% thorough your turn around hit full throttle you should be on his ass just change the rate you pull on the stick and ajust the throttle to keep him in your recticle. ...very effective I was able to murder tier 3 tie interceptors in my tier 2 y wing.

the real dog fights come when you hit the higher level ships when there are 5-6 tier 4 guys on you....
