Thread: Okay... I'm taking another look

I came back to take a fresh look at SWG... hesitantly. I am hoping that starships will be what it takes to make me like this game again. And I am willing to see what changes have been made to the basic game to make it worth playing again, too. The patches are downloading as I type this. We'll see.

Mybiggest fear is that once I get a ship, I'll just get ganked by pirates every time I try to take off. I really hope that since there are other ships besides Rebel and Imp that I can stay neutral and still fly.

What I really want out of space flight are the basics...

I want to be able to go to a starport, get in my ship, walk around in the ship toward the cockpit, take off, watch as the horizon pulls away and the ship goes skyward, hit space, and jump to lightspeed.

That's it. Really. Is that what it's like? If not... well chances are I won't last past the 10 days.

Butwhat I reallyneed to know... if I suck at X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, will I be able to survive in space in this game? I'm not a twitchy gamer by any stretch. Should I bother?

I have no idea what you meant in your post but here's the basics:

Go to a trainer (Pilot, Imp, Neutral).

Get your 1st mission (Mission based) AND your ship.

Go to a starship terminal.

Click "launch into space."

Load for a few minutes.

Bam, welcome to space.

yeh, no walk to the ship, basically, you load to a space station and your ship launches from there (should still have a little movie showing you taking off from the planet, either by shuttle or your own ship.)

don't worry about being jumped when you launch, most ships stay outside of the launching points radius (which stinks for people who don't have a fast engine) and won't come close unless someone trains them to you and they die (not likely in the noob systems)

the game is fun though, and is actually a little easier than XvT.

Hope you like it. if not /shrug

Okay well that's good at least.

So in reviewing other threads, I just want to clarify some things...

Essentially the only purpose of being in space is combat. You can't actually -see- your ship or walk around in it. The multi-player ships are just for co-pilots and gunners. You don't store cargo. You are never boarded. The only space encounters are some varient of dog-fighting missions.

Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of that.

If I'm right, my hopes for this expansion aremore or lessshattered. I was hoping that ships would work like houses. I would have expected the space terminals to zone you into a separate starport zone and that you would actually take off from the ground. I could almost live without flying through the atmosphere if the ship itself was for more than just point A-B and kill _____ enemies. :-/

And now looking at the skill tree...I can't get a freighter until I've MASTERED the pilot tree? So xx-thousand xp worth of dogfighting missions to feel likeI'm an actual Smuggler. I thought someone just said there was no grinding for this part.

Ugh. This return won't go past 10 days.

You can see the exterior of any one of your ships. You can decorate the outside nicely. Also each faction has 1 ship useable at master (like the yt-1300 for freelancers) which players can walk around in, you can decorate, store items, and so on....just like a house. As far as the only purpose of being in space is combat ... not sure what else youd like to do up there.

oh yea, and i stated theres no grinding needed to hyper to another planet or travel with your ship.

When do you just see your ship, or is there just a"takeoff" load screen/movie? I mean... when you use the space terminal, do you just go poof into space or is there more to it?

I'm glad you can walk around inside it. What bothers me is that I have to master an entire tree to get to that point.

For me, I just go poof in space, and then find myself in 1st person view inside my ship (TIE fighter). O and did I mention your mouse wheel or the +/- keys zoom in and out of your ship?

theres no take off movie, just a loading screen which is a bit different from ground loading screen- but same idea. Once your done loading you pop up like 1km from plant spacestation from which you took off. As far as the master thing /shrug mastering isnt all that difficult, enjoy the content while you can not much to do once youve mastered except deco your ship (my nova looks cool, thinking about putting a "brigg" in it).

Personally i wouldnt recomend spending 15/month for jtl if ground game didnt impress you, this sure isnt.

Maybe wait 6 months until they add content to jtl, have the bugs worked out of the "combat upgrade" and revamp for smugglers.

Actaully that's exactly what I'm going to do. I took a longer look around today. After Ifigured out how to optimize the game so I don'tlag to hell and back, I saw some of the improvements, and a lot of the things that still bugged me. Everything is still a wildnerness mission. Player cities are just as dead as always.I asked around, took a tour, did some hunting.

After hearing about the Smuggler overhaul and the combat upgrade, I'll stick with CoH till then. It has better graphics and a really fast paced, more interestingcombat system with more interesting missions. But it lacks crafting and community. So I'llprobably try MxO before taking a look back here, too. There's just not enough here yet to justify the cost. Maybe when Smugglers can actually smuggle.

Wow.

That's....

pathetic.

You just go to a terminal and poof?

Joy.

Can you at least fly between planets? Or do I have to go through endless grind to qualify for it... and only survive it if I am a X/W vs TIE Fighter joystick ace?
