Thread: Ace or the Ace game, who really is the top pilot on your server, in your faction?

ace ( P ) Pronunciation Key (s)
n.

A single spot or pip on a playing card, die, or domino.
A playing card, die, or domino having one spot or pip.
A serve that one's opponent fails to hit.
A point scored by such a serve.
The act of hitting a golf ball in the hole with one's first shot.
A military aircraft pilot who has destroyed five or more enemy aircraft.
An expert in a given field.

The master box for pilot currently gives an ace jacket, an ace helmet and the title of ace pilot. Personally, I find since completing the mission simply denotes you outclassed the game AI, it's not really appropriate to reward players with the title of "Ace". Am I an "Ace" pilot because I've completed this mission? I don't particularly feel like one, as there really is nothing to guage my progress aside from completion of the mission. Sure, I can pvp and total my wins/losses and reach a determination, but this does nothing for actually showing off your prowess. Now, before people harp on wanting to show off, let's be clear that most people do. The reason they put their "Ace" titles up is to accomplish that, like a status symbol, somewhat. What I'm asking for is something to differentiate between "Aces" who simply complete a relatively easy mission, and true masters of space combat.

That being said, would it be possible, or fun for the developers to include a wearable reward for true "Aces" on a server? In World War 2 there was the Red Baron, a famous german Ace, would it be possible to reward the top PVE and PVP pilot with something like this? Something like a jacket that would only be in the top player's inventory, and automatically transferred to someone who overtook him? I think it would be fun to be in constant competition for the "yellow jacket" so to speak.

The basis for the reward is up for debate, and let's discuss that here. I'd say most PVP and a separate ace reward for PVE tier 5 kills, but I'm sure there are holes in that theory. Any ideas? Devs? This sort of thing is a simple and ongoing game, it's basically content that everyone will continually take part in and hopefully have fun with. It's also entirely voluntary. Well?

While I find the importance some people want to apply to the Ace title in this game to be tedious at best, I do like the idea for a top fighter reward for pilots.

Imagine the content that would add, especially for Privateers, to have players offering cash to have you pilot for their cause!

I say yes, let there be a ranking system (as it is inALL twitch-based games) so ones can truly role-play their pilot part.

NOTE: I would probably be nowhere on that list. I'm just not very good at twitch-based games.

i think i'm an ok pilot, but definately not the best. i think the best deserve recognition though. keep in mind that "ace" is just a word, there can of course, be multiple aces and nobody is asking to remove the ace title, just have something to give a nod to the best pilot out there.

(not that anyone has said otherwise, just fyi for people who would read too far into this)

most kills is a classic "best" type of measure. i believe most of the wing commander game's had a "kill board". i don't see why SWG could not have that, kills seem to be as good a measure as any for both pve and pvp. are there others? maybe efficiency?

of course, an added bonus is that this type of reward produces a never ending grind, and encourages pvp. i think many features the developers add to this game have that same type of spirit, a push to encourage playing (read: killing) but perhaps they were a little too complex in their implementation.

this game would be straightfoward, simple and not result in anyone's toes being stepped on.

There are also multiple title for really good pilots. "Top Gun", "Spitfire" (I know that's the name of a craft), "Eagle","Starfighter", the possibilities are endless.

No offense, but I can't believe you guys would ask for a ranking system after seeing the FRS.
First off, there is no such thing as an Ace pilot in SWG. PvE takes a little practice, PvP takes no skill atm (I am hoping it will in the future).
Can you imagine all the players killing each other over and over in space based fight clubs to attain the ranks? Ack.

Well if they die they will loose ranking, right?

An expert in a given field. Since you get the title "ACE" at master pilot, you are by definitiona expert in that given field.

I'm sorry, Craxus, but I can't find your comment....is it in there somewhere?

Oh, nvm, I found it.

Yeah, it's a sad fact atm that people get the "Ace" title without "acing" anything.

Pretty much none apply to JTL really, but as flying goes Ace as the 5 kills is the closest definition we have.

Ok from what I see you want to "Define" Ace as some PvP title, when technically for the RP aspect of the game ANY advesary craft is an enemy regardless of NPC or PC so after 5 "Kills" you are an Ace by the textbook definition. What Ace means in this game is instead of the title Master Pilot they wanted a more flight orientated term for Master, hence we have Ace.

Ace is and should be the title replacement for Master Pilot only. No one should get special titles, gear, or recognitionfor PvP over PvE or for PvE over PvP it is as it should be a title for finishing the Piloting tree, not a reflection of skill.

This is a twitch based game, the advancementl boxes are for items and ships not a reflection of skill this was established by the Devs it is eveident in the fact that a 2222 pilot can down a Master Pilot (Ace) skill is what you do with the toys given by completeing your profession tree not the tree itself.

Slarus, JTL is a twitched-based game. It's an expansion for SWG, not a patch.

So, it's different than SWG, and always will be. There's just no comparing.

That being said, go check out other ONLINE twitch-based games, learn, then come back with your findings.
