Thread: What's wrong with this picture?

I read over the proposed uber-nerf and the one thing that jumps out to me is selling our pets to other non-CH players. I have a problem with this, since I train birds. You can train a bird to say a word or 2, but to hand him over to another on a permanent basis won't work. I am seen as the master and that bird will never obey another's commands. Most of the time, the bird becomes de-programmed, where it loses all commands and tricks. Most of time, you can't even teach it new ones.

So how am I to believe that I can sell a veermok to someone who knows squat about caring for pets? There's no logic at all. The idea of Novice Creature Handler is now a mute point since you can only tame and train young creatures, so why not sit back and have another player spend weeks becoming a CH and sell you one of his? It's the same thing, only you saved weeks of time training to be a Novice CH and the training points that would be wasted. I don't need the money anyway. With 10K, a CH can go anywhere and do much anything he wants, so why would I want to sell a pet?

The other thing is once you open the pets up to all classes, you will have hundreds of pets in the city. It's already slow on my machine and my machine surpasses 98% of the machines currently playing SWG. Now add a pet for every player.

Hunting would get just as bad. Picture seeinga group of 20 all with their pets following them. What a stampede and even my Athlon 3.2 (oced to 4gig) with a 5900 Ultra (also oced) would freeze up.

I think that most of the people who want pets for Non-CH's are talking about non-fighting pets. A trained K9 officer in the military or police can handle an attack dog, a hunter may train their bird-dog to retrieve bodies for 'em, but most of us have just plain ole' basic non-attacking pets. Maybe we can get them to roll over, or play fetch.

It's supposed to be an RPG... oh well... but anyhow people do want things that enhance their persona/character in ways other than combat/crafting/healing or other game-mechanic abilities. Just like people want clothes that make them look good, they may want a cuddly little pet to play with. I'm in favor of the idea, with a few restritions: No agressive creatures, novery viscious creatures, absoultely no killers, and no "attack" command. Their point would not be an addition to their Probot, but acute companionfor their non-combat times.

You may be right about the birds you train... but where'd you get 'em? Or do you breed, and if so do you keep all the babies? If you didn't breed 'em, you probably bought 'em, and if you breed 'em, you probably sell 'em. How's this really any different... provided they don't have the ability for more advanced features that one would need training/handling abilities for? I hope you're not goint to say that only CH's should use mounts now....

Mounts should be accessible to all, but ONLY CH should be able to use creatures as mounts that are aggressive and those that can DB. In the nerf, any and all commands that a CH gives to his pet will transfer to the buyer. I think that only the initial tier of commands should be transferable. Otherwise, what's to differentiate the CH's pet from all other non-CH pets?

heh i just read what you said as this....

i tame birds, you cant tame/train birds in real life and hand them over to someone else, so doing it in the game is wrong. thankyou for letting me say that, now excuse me, i have a shuttle to catch to another planet, where i'll use blasters to kill things, talk to non humans and see strange animals.

This happened last night to my roommate:

My roommate plays an Entertainer/Artisan Twi'Lek with 300 health.

On returning to town from one of her harvesters, she got attacked by an NPC brawler. With her CDEF pistol in hand, this brawler cons red to her.

She just kept running... not even burst running... and, firing over her shoulder, hit about 25% of the time. She ended up killing the poor SOB of an MOB.

Why is it that a PC with NO marksman training can hit something 25% of the time, firing back over her shoulder while running?

The Devs have some incredibly serious balance issues going on here between marksmen and brawlers... and saying "don't bring a knife to a gunfight" is cute only so long. (/sarcastic) The term for this, I believe, is "cliche". (/sarcastic) Cliches don't solve problems.

I think everyone here understands that it's unreasonable to expect that brawlers will have even odds in a gunfight. Howevever here's a few more things that are unreasonable, that the Devs seem to be conveniently ignoring:

1: Brawlers can never catch up to a running marksman.

2: Running Marksmen seem to be able to bullseye targets, while running, a very high percentage of the time.

These two things add up to the ability for Marksmen to successfully kite ANY melee class with near 100% success.

OTOH... there may be some tactics that brawlers can use to balance things a liitle. First, a brawler COULD take up enough marksmanship to whip out a pistol and force a posture change and/or knockdown, allowing them to catch up with the would-be kiter, switch weapons, and knock the spit out of them. However, I have heard of problems with targets being able to still move while kneeling?

Second, a brawler can take up Scouting and work on the Exploration skill. Being able to negotiate the terrain better than the enemy might help. Of course, that marksman probably also has Exploration, because he wants to be a BH or some other hybrid that requires it... thereby negating the advantage.

Finally, the idea that a person can't swing a fist faster than he can swing a sword is rediculous! A speed of 4.0 on bare fists? PLEASE! I think the Unarmed Combat folks wouldn't need double damage berserk or Vibro Knuckles, if you just made basic Unarmed Combat speed 2.0 instead of 4.0.
