Thread: fps in space
Oh yeah, I also forgot that a few things that will help just a little. Defrag your HD and make sure you don't have any other processes running in the background that you don't need.....for instance, people who use Internet explorer and like to have the forums open while in-game will usually have that program taking up valueable resources.....I.E. is known to have memory leaks and can suck a lot of resources from your game. I always check my system resources and sure enough every once in a while, I.E. is using way too much memory.
So keep your system clean, get more RAM, get a better graphics card. If you want to sacrifice visual quality, then turn off V-sync, disable some of the options under the game options in the launch pad. Also, if you use windows xp, turn of the visual themes (gives a small speed increase....not much, but it is noticeable)....
These are all things that I do or have done....so despite what anyone says, it may or may not work for you....just depends on what your cpu is like.

got a gig of ram and a ge force 5200 gc. no other game does this, and it only happens in space. i never get low fps on the ground, even in coronet flyin my ship through the starport area...
could be either your connection, if it's peek times your playing at or just plain and simple server instability on SOE's part.....I had the same problem you are having when I was playing beta....but since JTL has gone live, I haven't had any problems.....I haven't changed anything between the 2 periods either except those few adjustments I made at the beginning of beta.
Ultimately though, I think it's your graphics settings because if you don't have these problems in the ground game and it only happens with lightening, then it's more likely the particle effects causing the low FPS.....personally I try and keep particle effects as low as possible without hurting visual quality because my system can't handle high particle effects.
I bought Star Wars: Battlefront and it needed DirectX 9.0c, no problem I figured.
Only now SWG gets such horrid graphical lag it acts like it did before I bought my new system.
So I ran some experiments, I formatted, and installed strictly SWG with DirectX 9.0a and things were great.
I installed everything else I keep on my system EXCEPT for Battlefront. I even upgraded to DirectX 9.0b.
Everything was fine up to the point I installed Battlefront, which will ONLY play with DirectX 9.0c, the second I did that SWG went to hell.
CSR's, Devs, everyone I've talked to shrugs it off.
I've run this experiment 3 times, there's no doubt there's a problem with the way SWG handles the new DirectX 9.0c.
All other games run fine, except galaxies.
For what it's worth, if youv'e installed DirectX 9.0c that's C then you are probably experiencing the same problem I am.

that's interesting....I have directx 9.0c and windows xp sp2 along with the latest nvidia drivers for my graphics card, have installed and have much fun playing battlefront....but swg has not had any problems whatsoever.....it plays the same as before I installed battlefront....although I had directx 9.0c installed before I even had battlefront.
I'd suggest checking your card manufacturer's support forum for any kind of problems similar to yours either with SWG or any other games. Then update all your systems drivers from bios to sound card to graphics card..everything but only after you research if you need to or not...sometimes you just don't need to.
well, I"m all out of suggestions...hope you find a fix
