Hello All!
I know that when I first started, I did so not as an experienced online gamer, nor much of a gamer at all. Some XBox (can you say Halo 2!), but not much. There was so much that I have learned over the last year and half, that I wish I could pass some of those lessons on. My hope for this threed is for it to be positive and helpful. So here is my Top FIve, throw in yours too!
#1- Learn to be patient, looking at the game in terms of the big picture
I can understand when folks work very hard, and then things change and thus a strong reaction can result. I have "enjoyed" plenty of those moments. But the reality is that SWG is a massive underatking, beyond what I could ever convey. When I first started there were no bikes (you walked everywhere), no player cities, no space ships, and yes... we listened to eight track tapes vs Cd's. Ok, kidding on that part. What they have done with game in terms of the big picture is nothing short of amazing. It just keeps getting better, but over many months... not in a day or week. Why stress? Enjoy what we have, contribute, and look for what is around the corner.
#2- Bookmark and use all of the information that's out there on the web
I have lived in these forums when stuck, plus many other sites. I paid Multiplayer strategies their fee, and have gotten a ton from of ideas from them as well. It has saved me a lot of time when grinding, which makes a huge difference. SWG truly is a community, so use it. Ask questions. If you dont get an answer, ask again and be persistent. But dont take things personally on these board. There will always be people who choose to angry and discontent all the time. Ignore them, as it is just not worth the energy to get into a posting war. But their are lots of great people inSWG that will teach you what you need to know.
#3- If your in a combat profession, especially for Noobs grinding, use all the tools at your disposal.
Put another way, a Noob that has medical buffs, mind buffs, good food buffs that are properly balanced and focused on the right attributes, with good armor and a good weapon for his or her level will advance quickly. I remember leveling Pistoleer and Fencer at first. I would get myself Uber as so described, fly out to Dantoine, and pull an endless amount of Savage Quenker missions which were all red cons then for me. You get far more XP for doing mission above your level than for those at your level. As well, if you group with a pet you get an xp bonus. How does all this work? All these things "modify" your characters ability, elevating them to a capability that in truth (no buffs, no mods) is well above their base abilities.
#4- Either join a well run PA or somehow associate with a group of friends that will help each other out
My PA is run by some great guys! I mean just awesome. In the early days, I hooked up with other Noobs. Does anyone remeber the days when in Coronet hunting parties would form just from yells? Too funny. Yes, most every profession can be leveled solo. Nothign wrong with that. But done properly, with some good players, you will level much faster with the help of friends and veterans. Plus you learn a ton along the way. There are players that I chat with maybe once every three months. But because we all fought at the Tusken Fort in the days when you had to walk to get there, a bond is formed. We leveled together, died together, before all the cloning changes - ran around naked looked for all our stuff after dying "together". It does make a difference to at least have a few people in your corner.
#5- Do what you enjoy, versus competing with everyone else
Some people genuinely enjoy lots of grinding, putting together the best - latest and greatest template. Which is cool. But dont feel that in order to enjoy the game that you have to best PvP template or that you should be able to Solo Krayts and Elders blindfolded with no armor! If PvP is your thing, learn all you can about it, then throw yourself into that experience. If role playing is your thing, find out how to best itch that need. I see a lot of folks that put all their gameplay enjoyment on a given template, and then when things change (see #1), they loose it. If you enjoy what you do regardless, your gameplay will be less affected by external things that are largely out of your control anyways. If after you log out you think, that was fun or that was rewarding, that is what it is all about.
May The Force Be With You! I hope this helps...

This is the most important. If you're not doing something fun...try different stuff. Explore, learn, discover.

Not all things in the galaxy are for everyone and it might take a little routing about to find the best experience to match your playstyle.

even if you dont want to, master a crafting profession. this will attune your senses on how to buy things in the future. ie pricing fair or unfairly. you dont have to keep the crafting prof just master it so you can understand more of the game

I would definitely recommend that when you start out you grab all of the novice professions, regardless of what you actually want to be, for two reasons:
a) You get some basic missions from the beginner droid that will pay out a reasonable amount of cash for a new character, as well as a few useful items.
b) You understand a little of what is involved in the other professions.

I would also suggest checking the forums for events happening on your server. There are events happening all the timethat participation can be fun.

and sadly now-never go fight ANYTHING unless you got 80% composite armor and full buffs and brandy and canape.
and if you think you'll need help in combat-just get a TKM to come help you since they're gods anyways
