Just a few questions....
1. is it worth just sitting around waiting for him like i have read in some places or should i carry on as normal whilst waiting?
2. Do you have to be outside when he visits?

1. no, do what you normally do
2. stay away from npc cities/outposts

All sorts of crackpot theories seem to exist for how to get the old man to visit but what happened to me tends to disporove them all.
I'd been glowie 'in game' for about 2 hours and in 'real time' for about 24 hours & was just killing a few ragtag loons within the boundaries of Coronet when up he popped.
In short just hang around chating, kill some stuff, tidy up your house, whatever, he'll be there soon enough.
The only things that would really prevent him turning up are flying around on your speeder (he wont be able to keep up with you) or standing right in the midddle of a permanent city (he is shy).

he does seem to visit a little outside of cities, never seen or heard of anyone get a visit while inside (built up area) a city (other than a player city). he visited me on lok when i'd just logged on.
the trick works the same for the sith though, and i got a visit as soon as i did the sequence. went a good way out on naboo, killed a plains hunter, sat down, logged out, logged back in, went back to a friends camp, got attacked. no waiting about at all.

He visited me when I was getting a probe droid called down from orbit outside Kaadara.
You only need 24 REAL LIFE hours to pass, it is not based on game hours.

Yah, just do what you normally do. If for some reason you are in a city than shuttle into a player city every2 hours or so to see if it's your time.
