Reverse Engineering
A new concept to SWG, Reverse Engineering adds a whole new dimention to crafting. With this ability, shipwrights are able to take components looted from other starships, analyze them, and improve on their design!
To Reverse Engineer, you can either collect looted components on your own while piloting your starship, or you can reverse engineer components your customers bring to you.
The process is very simple - build a component analysis tool (all tools are of equal quality, but you can experiment on the # of charges per tool), put the component(s) inside, and analyze it(them). Depending on the equipment level of the component you wish to reverse engineer, you may need multiple components of the same type(not necessarily the same name) to succesfully reverse engineer a single improved item. For example, to reverse engineer a looted level 5 capacitor, you will need 5 looted level 5 capacitors in your analysis tool. To RE a level 7 booster, you will need 7 looted level 7 boosters.
The reverse engineered component's stats will be determined by taking each stat of all the items in the tool and picking the optimal stat in each category from all the items. A bonus will be and applied (1% per equipment level) to each stat, and written back out to the new component. You will be presented with a Technical Readout at the end of a reverse engineering session showing you the compiled stats, the percent bonus applied, and the finalized stats of the new item. You will also have a chance to name the component after reverse engineering it.

RE takes the stats for the items entered and sets all the best abilities as the max:
for an RE 3 Capacitor you need three lvl 3 capacitors
Capacitor 1
hitpoints - 150/150
armour - 147/147
reactor energy - 1100
mass - 2400
energy stored - 668/668
recharge rate - 24.1
Capacitor 2
hitpoints - 105/105
armour - 174/174
reactor energy - 900
mass - 2000
energy stored - 654/654
recharge rate - 29.1
Capacitor 3
hitpoints - 167/167
armour - 137/137
reactor energy - 1300
mass - 2800
energy stored - 768/768
recharge rate - 24.1
your final stats would be:
hitpoints - 167/167
armour - 174/174
reactor energy - 900
mass - 2000
energy stored - 768/768
recharge rate - 29.1
and based on the RE level of the shipwright, an additional bonus would be applied to each stat.

This was sort of the case under the old system but the new system depends solely on the level of the item, I.E. 7% for lvl 7 RE.

ahh, haven't seen it hat precisely yet, thanks
So you don't need multiple items of the same name then for RE'ing? So if you've looted a lvl 2 reactor, you can RE it together with ANY other lvl 2 reactor, for example?
(in that case it might of course make sense waiting to loot a few and pick the best two...)

Right!
Originally, it was identical items, but they found it too restrictive with the huge loot table, and a drain on the database from people storing bazillions of random items looking for matches.
So any level 2 reactor with any level 2 reactor. Looted, of course.

i'm actually gonna have this done to an imperial ion blaster I have and hopefully I can get some nice results I mostly want weight reduction, to keep the same damage and probably increase the fire rate.

Styx,
Doesn't REing parts also have a chance of finding one of eight "data fragments" that can be put together for the Firespray schematic also? I thought I caught wind of that in Beta but didn't hear much more.

Yeah, that's true, but somewhat sketchy as to what the mechanics are.It seems to be very random, but some people claim a higher chance of getting one of these disks when RE'ing a Kuat Systems part.
