My guess is no, since they dont have the gfx to show all the neat stuff in space.

Your guess would be correct. It's more of a them-not-paying issue than artwork.

No, they can't be a passenger on a ship that is launched into space but they can go with you if you use the travel option with a multi-passenger ship.
