Sounds like you were doing 'Duty' missions, or another repeatable mission. Tier 2 rebel trainer gives a repeatable 'Corsair' mission as well as TIE Duty missions.

That explains it. Read the spatial once you accept, it says you can stop at any time. Your usually given this type of missionwhen the trainer requires you to have a certain number of skills of the tier in question. Its the the 'space' version of going to the mission terminal.

So, once you end the mission, you get the option to do it again to continue gaining experience. Since you can end at any time, you really cant fail the mission.
