For players that havent' gotten far in any of the advanced professions, I would definitely suggest taking the scout profession and selling resources on the bazaar. Even if the quality isn't good, there are always people buying grinding material, so price it reasonably and it will sell.
Ultimately, for non-crafters, it comes down to how good you are with a weapon. Best way to improve that is get buffs, get a group willing to help you, and start taking on critters that give high experience. I think the best mixture is Dantooine - the huurtons aren't too hard, give good experience, and drop wooly hide. Move up to Mokks/Janta and you'll be raking in cash.
I'm still working on tier 2 of the Rebel pilot tree, and despite having almost 2 million credits in the bank, can happily say I've spent less than 40k on my ship. Most of my components are looted or bought off the bazaar for cheap, and I haven't had a problem with my Y wing holding together. They key is, know the limits of your ship. If you are in trouble, jump to hyperspace or use your transponder scramble if you're a Rebel. He who fights and runs away...
