i had this stupid Y-wing on me this morning lol. took me a couple mins to make it stop going around me in circles. i would turn with him and almost get in the right spot to shoot him but would only get 1 hit before he zooms away. i noticed the best way to kill them is to slow down once u get right behind them so u wont zoom right past them. they should make is so u can macth speed with a enemy and not just friendly guys

This is an actual dogfighting tactic (more or less) Usually in a 1vs1 dogfight two opponents will start at some distance of engagement. This range usually long range tactics involve fireing missiles or turning and running early. Once at closer range you swich to guns as missiles become ineffective becuase you have no lock. Eventually it boils down toa turning war. Now in the atmosphere its increasingly difficult to slow too far down but in space you can drop to zero speed with out gravity affecting you. Against an NPC simply finding your ships key turning point and speed it critical. Against a human player this may become a different scenerio all together.

like many others said, do not attack at full speed, just use full speed to fly towards off screen targets, flying to waypoints, or chasing down ships that are trying to escape.
personally, i typically press the down arrow 6 or 7 times from top speed to slow down ot attack speed. the engine i'm using seems to give me pretty good turning and rolling ability at this speed.
and with the circle tactic they use, i know what you mean, and it can be really frustrating when they do this, as it can seemingly take way too long to kill even the simplest enemy when they use this tactic, but don't give up, and keep taking those shots.
and go for the Reactor. FORGET THE ENGINES. Hit the reactor. on ships that you can't specifically target the weapons systems, disabling the reactor will shut down weapons systems, but taking out the engine won't drop weapons systems. if you are fighting a ship like a YT-1300 or a Gunboat that has multiple targetable weapons, take the weapons out first. weapons seem to have the lowest hit points of the parts, and they are the only things that can hurt you. you drop a YT-1300's 2 turrets, and it's a sitting duck.

I use the circle tactic against them. As stated, when they come at you, slow down and as they pass, pick up some speed into your turn to follow them. Adjust speed and place yourself on their 4 or 8 o'clock, seems to be outside their rear guns if they have them. I turn circles with the NPC and shoot at leisure if it's 1 v 1. Give me another humanoid for some real challenge.

I usually yaw until the offscreen target is right above me, then I hit the booster to catch up with them quickly. But im only tier 2 so I havent bumped into the really hard NPCs yet.

when i engage first..i got full speed...when theyre within 800m...i slow to half speed..i make sure i always blast 1 or 2 away before they go past me...then go half speed...and start leading with ur HUD targeting system...u need to know when to go BEFORE they do so when they do circle..ur already there
THATs when u blast 10 shots on'em and bang'em up till they go puff...then rinse and repeat.

I've found when you get in a turning war with an enemy and can't seem to damage them, just break off and try what's called the "boom and zoom". Fly away at top speed until you're close to a kilometer out, then return and blast at them, then repeat process. It's slow but effective if you just can't get the edge.
However if your enemy is superior in both speed and maneuverability, this tactic won't work. This is usually when I start using aerial maneuvers to get an edge (which isn't easy in a Y wing, which I've dubbed the Lead Sled).
Last night I pulled off a textbook loop against a TIE - I was being shot from behind so I flew into a loop - the TIE didn't follow the maneuver and kept flying straight so I came out right behind him and blasted him to pieces.
And if all these fail and you're being chewed to pieces and can't take your enemies out fast enough - consider a strategic withdrawal.
