Thread: Star Wars Names: The Name Doctor is IN!
Mao-Mao Roose
Riis' Star Wars Name quality sheet (subjective as all are)
Your name will be rated on a "Yes" or "No" basis. If there is a specific reason for this that may be helpful to learn, I will detail it's reasons.
I run through a simple yes/no questionnaire when I vet potential names.
Quality
Continuity breaking (copying a Star Wars character)? No
Continuity breaking (reference to current or recent pop culture)? No
Continuity breaking (cross-genre or inappropriate intra-genre words)? No
Phonetic version of same above? No
Intended humourous but too obvious? Yes
Now, I'm operating in a vacuum here, but it seems like the name is supposed to be kinda cute. If I can feel it trying to be cutesy, than others may as well.
Intended dangerous or capable but too forced? No
Species Appropriate
Continuity breaking (name does not fit established name guidelines)? Yes
This is a tough one because Timothy Zahn and others established some fairly rigid guidelines for Bothan names. Since the SWG client doesn't seem to care about this, there is continuity breaks spilling out all over the ground regarding Bothans. In your case, a last name of Ro'ose may have been more appropriate.
Fit of name for species? No
See above. Further, Mao-Mao is very Asian. You have to be careful to walk that fine line between using the wonderful Asian structures and sounds, and sounding like you watch too much anime.
Potential for species confusion?Yes
Yep. Mao-Mao is a fun name, but I would have pegged you human or even Rodian before Bothan.
Bonus points!
Euphonious?Yes
Say your name. Just say it. Sounds very very nice, if you are shooting for a crime lord or gangster persona.
Intended to stretch genre? No
Original to style?Yes
Not many Bothans get confused for cats. Well done.
Pronounceable? Yes
I didn't need your little statement to know how to pronounce it. I paid attention in 10th grade World History. ![]()
Centered on global culture and not Western? Yes
Maybe even too obviously so.
Player backstory intended fit into genre? Yes
This name has potential. It surely does, but a backstory and an apostrophe would go a long way toward rehabilitation.

Fit of name for species? Yes-ish
This is an example of a "nickname" that fits in nicely into the intent of nicknames established by Lucas with names like "Salacious Crumb" and "Dud Bolt."
Potential for species confusion? Yes
Whenever we see a human word in a name, the potential exists -- in your case I wouldn't worry about it.
Bonus points!
Euphonious? Yes
Quite.
Intended to stretch genre? Yes
If not stretch, then at least define.
Original to style? Yes
Pronounceable? Yes
Centered on global culture and not Western? Yes
Player backstory intended fit into genre? Yes
We already know quite a bit about you just glancing at your name. Put you in a cantina and we would know all.

Sorry, you don't get the full meal deal. Suffice to say your name fits in nicely. I would have no difficulty with your name except pronouncing it when intoxicated.

But I wouldn't worry about it. We get the point, and it wasn't using a hammer to do it.

Phonetic version of same above? No

Species Appropriate
Continuity breaking (name does not fit established name guidelines)? No
Fit of name for species? Yes
Obviously, mama Dev'lya didn't name you Sluggy. hence, the nickname rears it's head.
Potential for species confusion? No
An obvious Bothan clan-name, so even with Sluggy, it works.
Bonus points!
Euphonious? No
It's a fine name, but "Sluggy" is a famous thing here in the Land of Rain where I reside. Doesn't flow, and you and I probably don't care.
Intended to stretch genre? Yes
Reminds me of "Bone" in that the main characters had excellent but not painful nicknames that reflected their personalities.
Original to style? Yes
Pronounceable? Yes
Centered on global culture and not Western? Yes
Player backstory intended fit into genre? Yes, obviously
Obviously.

Sorry, you don't get the full meal deal either....the Name generator on this game can be painful for someone who loves names so like myself, but you came out on top. Your name is euphonious, practical, human and a shining example of a good, solid Star Wars name.
(Gonna remember your name too).
RbT
When in doubt, use the formula for creating your own Star Wars name.
First four letters of your RLlast name + first two letters of first name = SW first name
First three letters of mother's maiden name + first two letters of city of birth = SW surname.
It comes out sounding just about right more often than not.
(Of course I just made mine up out of whole cloth! Really! Stop trying to stalk me!)

Fit of name for species? Yep
I can even pinpoint you to some planets to be from with a constuction like "Lightmoon."
Potential for species confusion? No
A fine human name.
Bonus points!
Euphonious? Yes
Not ideal, but quite musical.
Intended to stretch genre? Yes
But isn't Kelliandra a sci-fi hero or something? Maybe not.
Original to style? Yes
Pronounceable? Yes
Centered on global culture and not Western? Yes-ish
The Anglo-Saxon two word fusion works very nicely here, but is NOT an ideal solution for names in all cases. Americans and British both gravitate to these names, as they feel culturally "natural" to us, but many other cultures see these fusions and get caught up in the meaning. In your case "light of the moon" is not the worst thing to be caught on.
Player backstory intended fit into genre? Yes
Undoubtably. And if not now, you should.

Robha Norav
No full meal deal here either. For a human, your name is a fine, but looks like you used some Star Wars naming scheme like that gent up there came up with. In my travels I now have six or seven of those down in my brain, and could even try to figure out which one you used.
Now, this isn't bad! But SOME fanboys might try to call you on it. You can tell them that ol Riis of Ahazi says its OK!
BTW, Norav is a cool last name.

Sorry, no full meal deal here either, and I wish I had time to, but some of us work for a living, like you and me.
Quite the cultural globetrotter there, eh? Indian AND Celtic! Well, your secret is safe with me and whoever reads this thread, but you should know the construction is conDoin. I'll leave it an exercise for the reader to find out why.
This all being said, if you are not a name specialist like myself, you may find that folks like your name. Starting with the A vowel and a trill is not a bad way to go. Westerners like us find that very soothing. Psychologically, it likely has something to do with the pedigree of our languages and cultures stretching back to those crazy Proto-Indo Europeans.
I took the time to point this out in hopes others can see this. While your name is firmly rooted in Earth cultures, you picked a good first one to sound nice in our ears.

By the way...
An in-game exorcism? This is definitely a story I'd love to hear.

However. A name like Lacto gets you thinking about milk. You gotta be aware that some folks won't be able to see past that.
Aye! This is where the chef occupation comes in. Lacto was originally intended as a chef. It's far fetched I know, but at least I tried.
I do have a character with a possibly better play on words on Bloodfin. A pacifist, human doctor named, Tender Lightmist.
Well, th whole Chef angle pulls it off then. Well done. As for your doctor on Bloodfin (whew! A missionary among savages!) I would say well done there, though I wonder what you are misting lightly...

Hmm, unpronounceable on one hand, almost unfortunate sounding on the other.
I'm glad I went with the totally random combination of syllable Aromon for my first name and let the in-game generator saddle me with Trinea as my last name ...
Aromon Trinea, Zabrak Droid Engineer/Pistoleer.
Recently retired his commission in the Imperial Navy after wisnessing a few too many acts of openly violent oppression and unwarrented cruelty. Now offers his services as a hired gun, often under the employ of the Alliance, returning home to tinkering away in his secluded droid workshop.
