Thread: Ship aiming tutorial part 1 of some strange number

Hi, all. I don't usually post here, since I'm currently having way too much fun in the game itself, but there's been an event that's caused me to change that.

You see, a friend of mine who just got JTL couldn't seem to get through the first space mission, and since she lives on the East coast (US), and I liveon the West coast, it's hard for me to 'see' her gameplay, and determine what the problem was. I suspected poor aim, and even poorer tactics (yes, she's read this, and no, she doesn't mind), so I took a lot of screenshots, did some... I'm babbling, aren't I? Sorry. I do that. Where was I? Oh, yeah.

Anyway, I came up with a "Dogfighting 101 - part 1" tutorial page on aiming your craft in JTL. I'm hoping it will prove useful, and won't violate the TOS here, or with SOE, though I don't see how it would.

To that end, the link is below. note that all there is there is the one page, and I only cover basic aiming of the ship. the parts on effective throttling, target selection and cooking your lunch on your engine without burning it will come later, when I have time.

I also have a question about the proper place to post about a small program I wrote to keep tabs on the SWG servers without firing up the game itself, OR launching a web browser. It's a cool program, but I don't want to post about it unless A.) I find the proper place to do so, and B.) can post a link to it without violating the TOS here, or with SOE.

Ok, I'm done for now. go back to your lives, citizens.

P.S. Almost forgot the link to the tutorial. Feel free to edit this line, if it shouldn't be here, oh gods of the board... http://www.singwithus.org/dmorton/SWG/tutorial1.html

Thanx for the kind words folks. And sorry about the "non-link". As you can see by my virtually non-existant post count, I'm really kinda new here, and didn't see any options for making it a link, though I noticed that when I pasted the address into the post window, it became underlined, and changed to a purplish color. I also didn't see a means of editing the post, once I finished making it. I suppose I'll learn all this, as time goes by, but for now I'll accept the dubious title of "board noob". As to the rest of the tutorial, I'll be working on it more as time goes on, so if you haven't bookmarked the page... Well, you'll just be missing out...

I take it the mouse retical only appears when using a mouse only instead of a joystick?

I cannot get that mouse reticle to appear. I think it said in your tutorial that it could be used by joystick players but no matter what setting I use I can't find it.

Thanks for all the work you put into the tutorial, it looks good.

Well, aparantly, the mouse reticle doesn't appear when using a joystick. I used one for all of about 3 minutes, and promptly smashed it to bits with a hammer, so my limited and admittedly defective (through age, of course) memory must've played tricks on me, because I remember seeing one with mine. Be that as it may, I'll make certain changes to the tutorial page as time permits. My roommate has graciously volunteered to write the parts of the tutorial regarding missles, countermeasures and booster use, and I invite anyone who has any insights of their own to chime in. The more the merrier, folks!

Nice guide

I personally use a joystick and miss not having the mouse indicator. I dont know about anyone else, but I find that I need to aim slightly behind the lead indicator when shooting at a turning ship. There seems to be a pretty big area behind the indicator that will still hit the target (depending on the size of the target of course).
