There isn't much difference between a combat medic and a doc who fights. The difference's lie in the setup of the 2 professions. Combat medics are already geared towards combat. In other words you don't need to add too much additional combat support because they are already built for combat healing. A doc who fights needs to add combat skills in addition to his healing skills because they are not part of his build up.

Combat medics/doctor combo seems like a good combo then. Can they solo and hold their own? How much damage can they do then?
I am a master doc/ master combat medic. Because of that combo, you will not have skill points to really spare on a combat profession. I used mine to get pistol 4 in the marksman line because I already had to have the basic marksman skill to get range support 4. As for my solo abilities. I can buff myself and wear the best composite armor in the game with no penalties. I can use Vasarium Brandy to keep my mind buffed. I can take missions and use my poisons to do the majority of damage and use my pistol to finish them off. Do not mistake my post though. I will not be on par with a combat professional, but you can do missions by yourself and with the upcoming combat droids, you will be even better(again not better than a combat professional but much better soloist).
But what you will excel in is as a combat multiplier in groups. You will find your abilities will make a small group of 3 or 4 be almost invincible.
