I generally don't use armor, though I do keep a PSG in my toolbar at all times. PSGs aren't wonderfully effective due to shifting stats, but it's "free" armor.

As a doc/CM though, I use range as my primary defense. While I can be hit at 40m, generally people (or critters) are more pre-occupied with red dots that are closer to them. At 40 to 50m, everyone is in range of both my poisons and stims.

On planned raids, I carry a suit of composite and keep it on a macro to put it all on (or take it off) if someone actually gets smart enough to target me.

When PvEing, I make sure any brawlers in the group know to watch my agro indicator (I never open fire on my own) and to /taunt if anything agros on me.
