Thread: BEWARE OF BANK TIP SCAM WHILE BUFFING

Hopefully most docs are already aware of this, but for those who aren't I wanted to post this info....

The is a scam in SWG right now (at least on Bloodfin) where a player will send a fake bank tip to pay for goods or services. All they do is send an email with the exact same text as a bank tip. There are only two ways I know of to tell the difference:

1. Check balance before and after receiving bank tips. This is kind of a pain in the butt if you have a long buff line.

2. Check the sender of the email. If it is a legitimate bank tip, the sender's name will be capitalized the same as their character. If it is a scam email instead of a bank tip, the name will be in all lower case letters.

I heard about this a week ago and checked all my bank tip receipts for that day. Out of 30, only one was a scam. A player named Huto on Bloodfin sent me an email instead of a bank tip on 2/26. Finally talked to him today and he claimed that he hadn't even been on since 2/23. Needless to say, with an email he sent as proof, I have reported him to SoE for scamming other players. Hopefully they will take appropriate action.

That sucks, but in reality, 1 person isn't gonna break your bank. It is uncalled for that people do stuff like this, but who knows.....all you can do is report them...which you did.

Wow, hearing this just makes me wonder what the heck people are thinking sometimes. At least on Tempest the people that would even phathom this seem pretty few and far between. Thanks for the heads up though as I'll probably ending up checking my emails from now on.

We need a way to tell the difference between a SOE email and a player email.

Just a thought here, OK? First of all, I don´t venture onto the forums but have been playing SWG for about 3 months or so. Secondly, what I am about to type is not how I am personally and does not in any way mean that I participate or approve of such scams. Thirdly, I know this is an old thread but I thought it a particularly poignant one which I am reading for the first time.

In IRL there are rules and laws that we are all encouraged to live by. Some people choose to bend rules, break them on occasion or choose to live wholly outside of the law. These people are known as criminals. All the people reading this post (I assume) are players of Star Wars Galaxies, a relatively new and compelling online Roleplaying Game. This gives us the opportunity to play a character in the wonderful Star Wars universe. This isa violent universe where most people adopt some form of combat training. There are also many noncombat things to do. There is a profession called Smuggler, the principal goals of which are to perform illegal slices on containers, weapons and armour and to smuggle spice. These are illegal practices which effectively brand you as a criminal. You do not have a title above your head saying that you are a cannibal or a spice fiend or a sleemo punk but you do indulge in criminal activities.

My point here is that crime is part of the game. If you are fooled by a cunning forgery (above mentioned mail) and you provide services without receiving adequate payment, more fool you. Feel free to warn people about it by whatever means you can, but do not talk to devs about what is clearly your shortcoming and your foolishness in falling for a scam and your perception of a glitch in the game. You have been conned by a confidence trickster. Get over it and move on. Most importantly, don´t let it happen again.

The only thing that is lacking here is an adequate policing authorityto take some action when you realise someone has tricked you. With the advent of player bounties, even this becomes less of a problem.

Policies Community Standards

Play Nice Policies - Activity within Star Wars Galaxies™: An Empire Divided™

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE BASIC RULES OF CONDUCT THAT GOVERN PLAYER INTERACTION AND ACTIVITY WITHIN Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided AND IN THE OFFICIAL STAR WARS GALAXIES FORUMS. FAILURE TO ACT RESPONSIBLY AND COMPLY WITH THESE RULES WITHIN STAR WARS GALAXIES AND THE OFFICIAL STAR WARS GALAXIES FORUMS MAY RESULT IN THE TERMINATION OF YOUR ACCOUNT WITHOUT ANY REFUND OF ANY KIND.

4. You may not defraud other players.

Fraud in all transactions between players will result in disciplinary action when confirmed by a CSR. Fraud is defined as falsely representing one's intentions to make a gain at another's expense. Examplesof this activity include but are not limited to -offering to"slice" a weapon or container belonging to another player and then keeping the items and credits - as well as using flaws in a secure trade window to deprive someone of one or more of their items or credites.

8. "Roleplaying" does not grant license to violate these rules.

Though Star Wars Galaxies is a roleplaying game set in the Star Wars universe, the claim of "roleplay" will not be accepted in defense of any of the anti-social behaviors mentioned above. As an example, you are in no case (PvP or otherwise) allowed to "train" a guard onto an enemy in protection of your homeland. In another example, a bounty hunter is not allowed to steal someone's corpse under the guise of roleplaying a villain.

To further expound on why it's against the rules as posted above me...

Many children play this game. My 12 year old cousin plays. He's a good kid... but an ADULT who attempts to scam him will probably get the better of him every time. Is THAT the sort of game you want to play in?

I didn't really even think of this either, but I hope that people don't read this and begin to use it all the time. Checking my balance each and every time I geta tip is tough, especially since people just send me the email when there isa line of people to get buffed. It shouldn't be something I have to worry about, but now it is.

There is a good way to catch this. Create a second chat window with only system messages in it. I stopped selling buffs a long time ago, but if I remember correctly, even bank tips generate a system message that you recieved the tip. This also keeps you from having to read your mail to verify payment.
