Thread: Customers who refuse to pay?

Last night I had the opportunity to run into a customer that insisted he payed, but he didn't. I have a special tab set up with ONLY spatial commands (no chat spam, etc), and I scrolled back through it three times to make sure I hadn't missed his tip. I also checked my e-mail box to make sure he hadn't bank tipped me.

He kept insisting that he had payed, while I knew he hadn't. He stood on top of me spamming that I am a cheat, a scam, etc.

How would you deal with someone like this?

the non-tip thing happens a lot now. what i mean is that people say they tipped but i did get anything. i think its a new bug in the system that not always money is being sent but who know. maybe they are just trying to cheat me. but if i tell them i didn't get it they will always tip again. and if 1 out of 100 people say they tipped and i didn't get it i will still buff him but even in the end they tip me. so dunno think if that person deserves to get buffed or not.

Bank tips (thru e-mail) can have some delay. But I have never seen it longer then 5 mins at a busy prime time spot on a server. With the e-mail scams etc. I always work in cash now. Since I only buff in cities, there is always a bank terminal relatively nearby for them to get cash at. I too have a small window for system messages only.

All too often people tip, or at least they think they did, but since they dont have money in their cash account the tipbonks. The tipper truly thinks they tipped but they dont have their chat screen set up as you do so they dont have a good way to double check (if their in coronet with lots of spaming going on).

I simply tell them that I did not notice their tip and ask if they can double check thier logs. Out of every 10 cases I get.

1. I messed up and just missed (1)

2. The forgot to tip(2)

3. They thought they had but did not have the cash (6)

4. Both of us think the other guy is wrong. (1)

When I ask about nonpayment I try to be as nice as I can since it can be a touchy subject and since I have a chance of being wrong as dont want to insult a good customer.

I let the 4th go as a buisness expense. Kinda like a critical fail while crafting. It is very rare.

Assuming you were nice when you asked then there is no need for a the mass spaming. That just shows how much a jerk they are and adds to the likelyhood thet you were correct in thinking they were out to rip you off. Dont take it to heart. Remember that 99% of your cusomers are supper cool people. Think of all the bows, salutes and great buff doc's you get and just ignore the guy.

I have had the case where I did not think someone had paid, asked them, they said they had but to save face they tipped again. Later I went and did a double check and sure enough I was wrong. Of course I bank tipped them more than their tip since I was in error. I mention this just so you know we all make honest mistakes.

When I buffed in public places, I would carry around a set of 'A' packs for people like this. If you have proof that you weren't tipped, and he/she insists they tipped you, the least you can do is drop some friendly enhance A's on them.

a piece of advice to docs, set up another channel for messages like the ones you get when you are tipped

DO NOT accept bank tips anymore, tip people near the banks and ask them too tip you in cash. There has been recent incidents where people have been replicating the mail that you get when you get tipped.

Basically this looks like they have bank tipped you whereas all they have dont is mail you!

either that or keep an eye on you bank before + after they tip.

But personally as i doc i will not be accepting bank tips unless from friends.

Let it slide. The buff profit margin is seriously huge anyway, you can afford to lose a little change here and there.

But, if it seriously bothers you, insist on secure trade.

Grief buff? You should be in the combat medic forum.

I'd like to elaborate on this a little more since I didn't have enough time to do it this morning:

He was in like, and I asked him to tip. There was no response from him, and no tip from him either, so I moved on to the next person in line, assuming that he had just accidently gotten in line without knowing it.

As soon as I started buffing the person behind him, he began raising hell. When I told him I hadn't received a tip from him, he began raising hell. Instantly, he started insulting me and telling me to read back through the logs. I triple-checked them and told him there was no evidence of a tip from him. He then tried to tell me that he had bank tipped me. We had been arguing for a good five minutes by then, so I was 99% sure that I wasn't going to receive an e-mail with the bank tip if he had been telling the truth.

He then spammed duel requests while telling me that he had over 1.5mil, etc, etc (I don't doubt it because he was a master weaponsmith). I politely told him I wasn't going to duel him, and he stood on top of me using the /spit emote and shouting that I was a scammer, etc.

I wouldn't have had a problem buffing him if I honestly thought it had been a game bug and that he couldn't afford another 7k. However, the way he was acting inclined me to believe that he was just trying to get out of paying me for a set of buffs, and the fact that he was bragging about having so much money didn't make me want to give him a free set.

I eventually stood up and went to buff on Dantooine, but it was still bothering me for the rest of the day.

I agree, grief buffing is mean. Remember there are two sides to every story. I have accused people of not tipping only to find I was in the wrong tab so I didnt' see that they had...and i've definitely had others insist they did when I know they didn't.

Keep it polite, and insist on /trade. It pops the window up, and both sides see the cash has gone thoruhg...if it doesn't work, then allow /tips.

But the flip side of customers not paying are those who tip you when you aren't ready for it--or haven't even said you are forming a line. They just /tip you the money...and you didn't see it or even know they were asking you.

I think it helps cut down on these problems to put a policy in your bio about tips.... something along the lines of, you prefer trade, use tip or bank tip at your risk...it takes time for me to verify the payment ....

If someone did use tip with me, and I didn't see it--I would announce that to everyone who was waiting--and make the person in question wait... if I coudlnt's ee it after a minute, i'd move to the next person.

But most people generally ask if you got their tip...

Another thing you can do--is ask them to tell you what was the last thing said or heard before they tipped in their log--that can help you find it in spam...someone said there is also a way to color code /tip...not sure what it was now as I don't intend to hawk buffs ever again....The profit is nice on buffs--but its stressful really if you get too many people /telling you all at once.

I got tired of this issue. I keepa chat window just for system messagesfor this reason too. However, when you have 20 people waiting and all tipping at different times it can be confusing. Add to it that yes, i have gotten burned with the bank scam. Once is okie, several times in one night gets old. So, I changed my methods.

I started putting it in my buff selling shout, my regularreminder and in my bio (which has my Buffing and Rezign information clearly stated) that a person should ONLY tip when asked at the time the first buff fires off. Donot tip me beforehand. Period. If you tip ahead of time (as in several minutes to 20 mintues) when I am not looking, it isa bonus. So tipping me 10 mintues early..may or may not pay for the buff. I want to be looking for that credit transfer, not lose track fo their credits and accuse a perfectly innocent customer of crapping on me.

It has worked very nicely since then. I don't get complaints from my customers. Most are very thankful that i am not trying to scam them and that if another dr comes along with shorter lines, they can walk over there without having to spend 5 minutes waiting for me to find their tip in system messages or email and tip them back.

Now the occasional out of turn tipper can be dealt with easily and I usually dont take it as a bonus but apply it to payment for the buff. It's only if they get rude Then it's payment for me putting up with their attitude.
