Thread: Progressing Up Carbineer -- Which Skill Boxes to Get

Let me say that this is from the point of view of someone who groups always (I cannot get Squad Leader XP unless I am leading a group), and thus needs to be able to do Health damage as well as Crowd Control to be effective. If you are a solo person, please post your version of this.

Here are the benefits for each tree:

  • Assault Tactics: Get ScatterShot and WildShot. ScatterShot will damage more than one pool (this seems worthless to me, maybe its a good PvP skill?), and WildShot will cause Stun status (Stun does not mean the creature stops attacking like in other games, its a de-buff). You get Carbine Speed skillmods here.

  • Marksmanship: Gets LegShot3 and CripplingShot. LegShot3 is not that big of an upgrade from LegShot2, but CripplingShot is very powerful. You get Carbine Accuracy skillmods here.

  • Counterinsurgency Tactics: BurstShot is here, as well as SuppressionFire2. BurstShot1 is more damaging than FullAuto2, but without the stun/dizzy effect, for a bit less HAM price than LegShot2. This tree gives Counterattack (worthless), and Defence Vs. Knockdown/Intimidate skillmods.

  • Special Abilities: Since this uses Combat XP, its not really something thats a choice... either you go up it and spend your Combat XP or you don't FullAutoArea and the good carbine knockdown move, ChargeShot are here. These are all very cool.

So assuming you spend your Combat XP to go up Special Abilities as you are able, there's three trees to choose from each time you advance.

Here's my thinking on it:

  • My speed and accuracy are fine for now, I can't complain too much about either

  • Get BurstShot1 first for big damage increase and decrease in HAM usage

  • To me, LegShot3 is worthless since it only hits Action and most groups kill with Health due to Pistoleers, so no need to get that

  • Both ScatterShot and WildShot seem worthless, so no need to go up that tree except for Speed

  • So obviously the next step is BurstShot2, and get Defense Vs. bonuses along the way. BurstShot2 hsa the same low HAM cost of BurstShot1

  • Now it might be time to think about getting CripplingShot for when you want to spend a ton of HAM to dotons of damage, and pick up accuracy along the way.

  • However, you're only one skill box from Master Counterinsurgency Tactics, and a very cool title (I think it was something like Marauder or something, can't find a listing on the web to refresh my memory), so why not pick that up and get SuppressionFire2 as well

  • Now I'd say head up to Crippling shot at Expert Marksmanship

  • Now its time to get some Speed from Assault Tactics, and WildShot1 to play around with

After that, its really a choice of whether or not you're going to Master. 2/3/4/x would be a very potent Carbineer without spending all the skill points necessary for Maser.

Hey there,

I went the speed column first so got scatter shot and heres my take on it.

It fires for slightly less than legshot 2 for cost, think 98 action for legshot and 92 for scattershot. (49 action cost on laser carb)

Legshot 2 's dmg multiplier seems to max my dmg in the 600 range on a 200 dmg carbine. Scattershot hits just as hard as fullauto2 (action cost 137) for 40 less action. It hits mulitple pools as once, most commonly Health and Action. It can hit just one pool at a time, tho, theres some amount of chance involved with it.

It is definitely a worthwhile style, as its using the same dmg multiplier as full auto and doing damage most commonly into the health, which works VERY well when grouping with pistol users.

Forgot to add,

Full auto 2 and scatter shot max dmg at about 1080 or so on my spam screen, with higher values reporting at the mob due to the armor/weapon class dmg modifiers. Highest hit I've seen on something was over 1400 with scattershot, which matches full auto2.

note: there's a bug that says you always hit for 1 dmg w/ the scatter shot, so you'll hafta look at the screen for the numbers flying from the enemy's head

Anyways, this was probably the most helpful post EVAR! THANKS!!! I now have 250K xp and was about to spend it on marksmanship 2, but now I think I'll get Counterinsurgency Tactics

Heh actually I'm up to Scatter Shot 2 now, and I must say, it KICKS ASS! With low HAM costs, this move does extremely high damage to multiple pools. What's the use, you say? Well, first of all, the multiple pool thing allows you to steal a lotmore XP in group hunting . Secondly, because of the multiple pool damage, you don't have to worry about it doing random pool damage since it'll pretty much hit 2 out of 3 pools each shot. I've also one-shotted a bounty hunter with this skill. So yeah...
