Thread: Benifits of Carbine over Pistol?

I'm having trouble decideing on what weapon to use. Currently I have rifle and pistol specialist. Of the two I like pistol better becuase it's faster and better at close ranges. I don't like having to take another weapon along with rifle for those close encounters. I'd like a good damage general purpose kind of gun. The mid range of the carbine sounds interesting, but the damage/delay doesn't seem as good as a pistol. How good/bad are carbines at close range? How about from afar?

Could someone explain the benifits of using a carbine over a pistol? I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.

OK, this is what I have been able to gather about the diff between the weapons (if anyone thinks I am wrong, please feel free to correct me). Bear in mind it has only been a week that I have played... and while I am advancing quickly (relatively), and I am an avid bookworm (read all the manuals and guides) I am by no means an expert.

Pistols have fast action, and primarily affect the health pool of your victim. But they are not good at long ranges.

Carbines are much slower to operate, better at mid ranges, and primarily affect the enemy's Action pool

Rifles are your best long range weapon, are a little slow as well, but are great for attacking a target's Mind pool.

So it comes down to this: Which pool does your enemy appear deficient in? Attack that pool with the correct weapon. I am pretty sure you will see much better results than attacking with pistol, simply because you like it. Better to use the right tool for the job, I say.

On a personal note, I (Druu Scandana) have all three weapons. I started with just the pistol, but I found I like the carbine, even though it is slower. As such, I tend to use it a lot on the various animals and such. I just recently crafted my own rifle, noticing that a lot of animals are defecient in the mind pool... but I have yet to gain a real profeciency with it. Also, do NOT disregard the ability of unarmed or melee combat. Sometimes I have found that I do more damage up close by whomping someone, than if I hit them point blank with my carbine or pistol. That little survival knife comes in VERY handy at times.

I do just fine at ranged.. and pointblank if I switch to a closer ranged weapon. I would not trade my Carbine damage for a Pistol or Rifle any day. Even in PvP I do very well. Really its all a matter of how you use the styles. Hopefully in a week or two we wont have to worry about killing ourselves. I think every Combat class has the potential to oneshot kill someone. I've done it many times so far just with Burst1. Melees a no threat once you get /actionshot2... the first or second bleed usually kills them.

There wasnt' anything in Pistol that I liked compaired to Carbine. And for me Rifles are only good if your at Range and either kneeling or prone.

So is it best if everyone in the group uses the same weapon type since each on effects a different HAM bar? I have to regular friends who I group with, bith use pistol. I wanted to try something different from them, but why attack action/mind of everyone else is hitting health?

There are more to the weapon specialist trees than just the special moves. Pistol has a lot of defensive bonuses that Carbine doesn't as an example. Same with Rifle. Carbine seems tohave a bit more general offensivebonuses than the other two weapons styles. Each style has special attacks that seem to work very well in the hands of a skilled player, but that work poorly when used by a less skilled player. It really comes down to personal preference of weapon styles. I think that Carbines will be doing really well once the bug with HAM costs is finally fixed.

And already a lot of those HAM bugs are starting to go away. My EE3 Carbine is awesome, and I tihnk carbines are the best weapons out there, expecially with Action shot because it forces enemies to a lower posture, which stops them, and bleeds the action pool, while I get off at most 2 leg shot 2's. Which just murders enemies, I can solo any red that doesn't have a ranged attack this way, and I get awesome experience for it, I think carbines are at the least the most versatile of the the 3 ranged weapon types.
