If you're just sitting in the back and shooting and have someone (a melee) up front tanking and drawing fire, then armor is worthless. If you are actually in a situation that you'll actually get hit, then armor is worthwhile. On the other hand, if you're just going to sit back and use standard shots, then you may as well wear armor because it won't hurt anything.
