A carbine is basically a shortened rifle modified to fire pistol (although longer rounds) ammunition.

Modern carbines offer the same rate of fire as assault rifes, with the same level of accuracy. The recoil on carbines is smaller due to the smaller ammunition, and so allow the user to fire sustained bursts with greater accuracy.

However, it seems that in SWG, the 'carbines' are basically sub-machine guns.

Good point Salvor.

I wasn't getting mixed up with sub-machineguns - my definition was just a little dodgy

Most modern carbines fire shortened rifle ammuntion which is less powerful, but like you said, it depends on what the weapon is chambered to fire.

Scrap what I said and listen to Salvor

Older carbines were single shot models.More moderncarbine modelswere produced with selectable rate of fire, and full auto carbines are now easy to find. The swg version has full auto capabilities, making it similar to a sub-machine gun in size and application at least although it may not fit the true definition.
