Joystick makes a HUGE difference for me. Big improvement over mousing it. This is what I use and it is worth every single penny I spent on it. I used to play X-Wing vs TIE Fighter for hours on end, way back when, so I'm a bit of a joystick snob. A regular ole Joystick will be a big improvement over the mouse, IMO.

Joystick vs. Mouse...the controversy continues. It really depends on how much you're going to fly in space and how serious you want to get. There's really no contest when it comes down to a good joystick pilot vs. a good mouse pilot...the response of the joystick is just more accurate reflexively. (if that's a word)

The problem is they'd have to be a good joystick pilot. Not everyone is able to get the feel for a joystick.

Uhm - wrong forum.
Other than that - I usually use a mouse in 3rd person view, and I do pretty well, but I dont PvP in space a lot.
I once borrowed a joystick from a friend, though, and the huge advantages you will get are:

- 3 axes: You can pitch, yaw and roll without having to use the keyboard. Using PYR instead of just PY will give you better turning rates and more evasion options. Only relevant in PvP as far as I can see, though.

- everything important on one input controller, no need to switch between mouse and keyboard frequently.

Buy a joystick and you won't regret it. It might take a wee bit of getting used to if you've played with the mouse for a while but it improves the flying experience so much you won't believe how you got along without it.

Considering that fighter aircraft are equipped with joysticks and not flown with a mouse, I'd say that's all a pilot would need to know.
